I am searching for information about the descendants of John Dunn (b 1765) and his wife Margaret Casey (b 1770). They had at least one son, Thomas Dunn b 1798 in Trim.  He in turn married Mary Corroghen and they had 2 children (names and sex unknown). Thomas Dunn was sent to Australia as a convict on the Countess of Harcourt, 1824, leaving behind his wife and two children.  They were never reunited and in 1826, her residence was given as Kilcock, County Kildare, 'on the parish'.  I am interested in how to find any descendants of either John and Margaret Dunn, or of his son, Thomas Dunn and his wfie Mary and two chidlren.  Any thoughts about how to go about this would be greatly appreciated.  Jane Dunn

Thomas was transported for life on the "Countess of Harcourt". He arrived in Australia on 21 Dec 1822. Worked at 'Newington' at Whittingham, near Singleton. He applied unsuccessfully in 1826 for his wife, Mary Corroghan, and his 2 children to join him from Kildare, Ireland at John Rotton's property "Newington". He was granted a ticket of leave in 1830 for apprehending the bushranger Joseph Auden. Thomas became a police constable and was given a conditional pardon in 1839. If you go to Singleton today, you will find the name Dunn everywhere - all decended from Thomas.

Please let me know if you want to know more about the decendants of Thomas Dunn.

  • Hello, I was very excited to receive this comment and did respond directly to your email but do not know if you received that email.  I am one of the Singleton Dunns and would be really interested to know where you fit into the picture.  I would be very interested in having whatever information you may have about Thomas Dunn's descendants. What would be the best way of communicating that info?

    Kind regards

    Jane Dunn

  • Hello, I am a descendent of Alfred Peter Gayler. He was my maternal Gr.Gr.Grandfather, married Maria Dunn in Sydney, moved to Dalby Qld, then to Roma, Qld, back to Dalby where he died in July 1869. I would be interested if anybody would like to contact me for more infomation. I have just joined this group and don't know how to get in contact with anyone yet. Still learning.

    regards,

  • Hello Graeme, I live in Newcastle NSW and your gr.gr.grandmother Maria Dunn was the sister of my great grandfather John Thomas Dunn. I never knew my grandfather, let alone my great grandfather but I've heard stories about him! There may be others in my extended family who have information about Maria and her family and desendants.  My brother in law has done a lot of research on Ancestry but I don't have an account so I can't see what's there. A few years ago I was lucky to visit Trim in Ireland where the story began and I hope to go back again in a few years with more information gleaned from Ireland Reaching Out, and follow up on all my Irish ancestors.

    Regards Jane (Dunn)

  • Hello Jane,

Thank you for your reply. I have always known that Alfred Peter Gayler married Maria Dunn and I have their Marriage Certificate, but our family never had any info about Maria's family. Then, on or about 24th Jan.2017 we found out that Maria's father and mother were convicts, that IrelandXO.com existed, that convict records were available and the rest is history. Our knowledge of the Gayler side is extensive and well documented and I am willing to share it with anyone interested in that branch of the family of which I am a decendant. My recently deceased mother was a Gayler from Alfred Peter Gayler. I have a couple of Gayler cousins in the Ipswich area of SE Qld but they are not interested. I am the last of my family's line descended from my father's side and my mother's side. There is no one else, sad but true, according to the info that I have.If you would like the Gayler data, I could send it to you.
