  • Hi there,

There are Roman Catholic church records available for Aghnamullen Eastbut they do not start until 1857, and Aghnamullen West do not start until 1841. Civil registration records do not begin until 1864, so also too late for you.

How do you know the exact location? Did you find this out in a record or document?

You could check the 1796 Spinning Wheel Premium Lists (www.failteromhat.com). There are 4,400 names listed for Co. Monaghan.

There are estate records which include the area of Aghnamullen. These are the Crofton records which can be found at the National Library of Ireland, Ms. 4530, Rental 1792. All tenants. NLI Ms. 8150, Rentals 1769-1851, some full, some major tenants only.

Also, the Earl of Dartry (later Viscount Cremorne): NLI Ms. 3181. Maps with tenants' names, 1779. NLI Ms. 3282, Rental, 1780. Major tenants only. NLI Ms. 3184 Rental 1790. Major tenants only. NLI Ms. 1696, Leaseholders. NLI Ms. 3674, Rental, 1796-7. Major tenants only.

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Sinead

Thanks for the suggestions. That was great, I had tried ellisisland with no luck.  I was interested in the spinning wheel lists but had not found them yet. No luck there either. Castle garden didn't start till 1820.

I am pretty sure they were either Protestant or Church of Ireland.

I found their place of birth on documents that were in with the land title documents in Ontario. I will try to upload a scan of them.

    Thanks for the help.
