hi,

I hope I am in the right Parish for the Townland of Knocknagrave.

I am interested in contacting descendents of the McGRORY family from Knocknagrave.

My grandmothers sister Mary McGUIRK married Michael McGRORY in 1930 in Monaghan.

In 1911 Michael was 10yo and living with his parents in Knocknagrave.

His parents had been married 14 years so c.1896, so I would expect to find them in the 1901 Census...

No such luck unfortunately.

In fact I cannot find Patrick McGRORY anywhere in Monaghan in 1901.

Maybe they married elsewhere and returned to Monaghan and bought a farm ??

The Townland of Knocknagrave has been recorded as Kncoknagrave in 1901, which didn't help.

There is a Baptism record for Patrick that would fit in 1858 in Monaghan.

There are a couple of older records that seem to tie the McGRORYs to Knocknagrave.

John McGRORY born 17 May 1876 Knocknagrave, Monaghan, Ireland
parents Michael McGRORY and Anne McGRORY nee KEENAN.

But I don't find the family in Griffiths Valuation 1858-60.

Descendents of Michael and Mary who I met recently, seem to think there is a McGRORY Scottish connection ??

I need some help to make the connection make sense.

Regards,

SEAN

  • Hi Sean,

There is a record of the marriage of Michael McGrory and Anne Kennan in Monaghan 1870 on www.rootsireland.ie/

You need to buy credit to view the record but it will give you his father's name and the parish.

Hopefully then you / we can keep working back to Scotland

  • Hello Sean.  I realise this is an old post but I have only just found it and thought I would make contact.

I have a connection to the McGrory family from Knocknagrave, although it goes back furether than your query so I don't know how helpful it will be.

My great-great-grandmother was Margaret McGrory born 1844 in Donagh Parish.  Her parents were Michael McGrory and Margaret McKenna.  I do not have any relevant dates for them.  Margaret had a sister Anne born in 1847.  A newspaper item printed in Australia in 1903 said Margaret was a native of Knocknagrave.  It also indicated she had brothers James, John and Michael (relevant dates unknown) who may also have migrated to Australia.

I am not aware of a Scottish connection for my McGrory line.  I would be interested to know if you have found out any more information about your McGrory connection.

  • HI,

Sorry I have very little info on the McGRORYs before 1901.

They were my mothers first cousins - her mothers sister married Michael McGRORY b.1901.

I am not really in touch with anyone who could contribute further details.

    Regards,
