I am wondering if marriage records from about 1833 are available in Carrickmacross. My gggrandfather Michael Martin (1807-1875) lived in Tiragarvan, Carrickmacross and married Bridget Keenan (1810-1889). I do not know where she is from. They had sons that I know of - James (1833-1893), Peter, my ggrandfather (1845-1917), and Patrick (1847-1911). I am looking for Bridget's parents. The farm passed to Peter after the death of his parents. They were Roman Catholic. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

The RC marriage records for Magheross start in 1838 thru 1844 and then 1858-1881. Baptisms start in 1858. I looked at the 1861 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Magheross civil parish and there were numerous Keenan entries which will make it difficult to find the father of Bridget. One of them was a Hugh Keenan in Tiragarvan.

  • Hi Roger,

I know about Hugh Keenan - I am trying to prove he is Bridget's father or brother - which is why I was trying to track down the Martin/Keenan marriage certificate. It looks like they start too late to be of much help. But perhaps I can find it by contacting St. Joseph's Church directly. I think that is my next step.

    Thanks for the help.

  • Anita,

I don?t think any records for this parish exist for 1833, but even if they do, don?t expect too much from them. RC marriage records from the 1830s do not normally contain parents names etc. All you generally get are the couples 2 names and their 2 witnesses. Nothing else.
