My 2x GG Thomas Graham, married in 1842 to Elizabeth Martin. At the time of marriage he was living in Tullygoney and she was living in Rafeenan. I have their children's birth dates and Thomas and Elizabeth stayed in this area until they passed away in 1882 and 1892. Thomas was a labourer and there were sometimes3 or 4 year gaps in between the children being born. The reason not sure. This has me curious why?

Thomas's brother Robert married Elizabeth's sister Martha Martin but I'm looking to find their marrriage record and children they may have had while living in Monaghan. Both men were labourers. The Griffith Valuation shows they each rented a very small house, Thomas in Tullygoney and Robert in Rafeenan. I would like to find out it they had any other siblings I could trace. I found a death record for a Robert Graham in 1844 from Tullygoney, so he might have been their Father. My main request is to find the marriage record date for Robert and Martha and any children they had while living in the Parish of Tydavnet, Church of Ireland.

I was suppose to visit last summer but because of Covid, my plans changed and I am so anxious to discover all I can before travelling to Ireland to make the most of my time there. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Cheers from Canada

    Hello Susan,

I have looked through the Church of Ireland records for Ballinode, I could not find a marriage record for Robert Graham & Martha Martin. But I did find a baptism record for their daughter Mary on the 15th August 1847, unfortunately there are no further records relating to them among the church records. There was a few death records (see attached).

I did see the death record for Robert Graham in 1844, he is possibly the father of Thomas & Robert as I noticed that Thomas & Elizabeth named their first son Robert.

    Hi Catriona,

Thank you so much for this new and exciting information!!! I already had the death info on Thomas and Elizabeth and new they stayed in Rafeenan from marriage until they passed away. I am convinced that Robert Graham who passed away in 1844, living in Tullygoney was Thomas and Robert's father. Now I'm wondering if Elizabeth Graham who died 1841 living in Tullygoney was their Mother. Thomas and Elizabeth's first born daughter was named Elizabeth and the next daughter Jane.  Now moving to Robert and Martha, if they had a daughter living in Drumcoo, is that in the Parish of Tedavnet or is Bellinode a different parish? The Parish of Tedavnet is where all the children of Thomas and Elizabeth were born and baptized. At some point Robert and Martha move to Belfast so they either had all their children in Monaghan or maybe Belfast?  Thank you again for your help and kindness. Hoping next yeat to visit, so fingers crossed. Take care and keep safe

  • Hello Susan,

Ballinode is part of the parish of Tydavnet, but for records of this family they appear in the Ballinode church records.

  • Hi. I live in Florida and have been trying to find these sisters and I came across this note. Andrew Martin and Bessie (Jackson) Martin had 6 children. Eliza, Mattie, Andrew, Robert, William and John. The 2 girls stayed in Ireland and married Graham brothers. Bessie and her boys moved to Cascade and are all buried there except William. Andrew is my husbands 3rd great grandfather. I have a lot of info on the boys but not so much on Andrew except a few things like he fought under Wellington.

So I am looking for any information on Andrew and Bessie (Jackson) Martin. Andrew was born in Ballinode per family records. He was of French Hugenot ancestry. He fought in the Napoleonic wars after his two daughters were born. (Mattie and Elizabeth 1805 and 1812). He served under Wellington. He was injured in the war. He then had the following boys Andrew 1826-1877 married Jane. They had a hotel in Cascade Iowa and are buried at Cascade Community Cemetary.  William 1828-1875  married Belle Forsythe. John 1829 - married Letitia Mars and had one daughter. He died in Cascade Iowa of consumption in 1856. Letetia remarried a Yule and is buried in Tipton Iowa. Robert Jackson Martin 7-22-1822 to 1-2-1903. While in Ireland he was for a time a constabulary and helped with food being given out that came from US during the famine. He came with his mother Bessie in 1854 first to Hartford Connecticut then to Cascade Iowa and worked as a carpenter. Andrew and John had already moved to Cascade area. Not sure when William came to US. A news article after his death said his father lived to 93 and his grandfather over 100. Robert married Margaret and lived in Cascade Iowa. He and other Martin's are buried at Cascade Community Cemetery. All the boys were born in County Monaghan.
    Any information is appreciated.

  • Elizabeth Graham, nee Martin was my 2x Great Grandmother. I have information on the sisters. If you are comfortable providing me your email address, I will look up my research and give you what I have and where I got the information.
I just some time to review my notes so won't be able to respond until the weekend.
