I'm searching on info about my Dad and his family. His name wasPatrick Joseph Sherry on his baptismal. That is dated March 31 1904. He was born in the workhouse and eventually was living with a family in Monaghan. Ive heard he may have lived in two different family homes. We"ve been told his mother"s name was Mary Sherry but I've also been told Maggie. The only proof we have is a copy of his baptismal. I hope someone can  assist me in any way.  We as a family feel very discouraged and just want to know his background. Thank you and look forward to any replies

  • Do you have any other information?  I looked at the BMD records for 1904 and nothing came up which fitted your information. Where was the workhouse?  Where was he baptised and who were the sponsors at the baptism?

I also checked the 1911 census and all the Patrick Sherry's in Monaghan seemed to be with family.

Where and when did he marry and what information do you have from his marriage certificate?

I have looked as some of the distant lines in my tree married Sherry.  I suggest you look at every name attached to whatever records you find as relatives are often involved.

    Good luck

  • Dear Alice:

I have also found a transcription of the Church Baptism Record which I attach to this reply.  You will note that his mother's name is listed as Mary Sherry and that his sponsor was Sarah Madden.  Do you know the name of the family that he may have lived with?  If you do, you might look for them in the 1911 Census which you can access here:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

You might also look for Sarah Madden as she may be a clue for finding out more about Patrick Joseph.  Just out of curiousity, I input her name for the 1911 Census and this is what came up:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Monaghan/Kilmore/Greagh/810356/

You will note that she and her brother had an adopted child.  It may be that Patrick Joseph is also listed in the 1911 Census as an adopted child but with another surname (not Sherry).

Good luck with your search.  You might consider making contact with the Health Services Executive in Monaghan who may have foster children records for you.  In addition, there is an agency TUSLA, who may also be able to assist. If you would like to email me directly, you may do so at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Hi Jane

Thank you for taking the time to reply and thanks for all the info.AllI I know is we have a copy of his baptismal March 31, 1904 That is all the info he was ever given . I wondered like you if it is entrely a  different name? . He was born in the Monaghan workhouse and at 9 years of age went to live with the McCarron's. He came to Canada in 1924. He was married in 1939 and had five daughters. I am one of those daughters. My Dad only wanted to know a bit about his  background. My Mom had a big family and  I think it hurt him that he couldn't find out.  My Dad felt that people did know but didn't want to share that info. We have searched but have never had any luck. We also feel that people are aware of the history but do not want to share.I'm not sure if it is because he was illegitmate. I can't think of another reason after all those years. I will try with all the suggestions you have given me and thanks once again for taking the time to reply
