A Catherine Hanratty was baptized in Muckno (Castleblayney) on 17 July 1836.  Her parents were Patrick Hanratty and Rose _____.  I believe this is the same Catherine who married a Patrick McGeough in Muckno on 24 April 1856.

She had a brother or other relation named John Hanratty, born about 1840, who emigrated to Troy, New York, USA around 1862.  Another relation in the Troy area was a Eugene J. Hanratty.

A Patrick McGeough and a Catherine were living in Sheetrim Townland, Creggan Parish, County Armagh based on Griffith's and subsequent valuations.  Although just a guess, there were several Hanrattys in Drumacon Townland, County Monaghan per Griffith's, which is not far from Sheetrim, and so perhaps Catherine came from Drumacon.

The Patrick and Catherine in Sheetrim were my great, great grandparents, and I will be visiting the Creggan/Muckno area at the end of July on a family history trip.  Any information or additional guesses about this Catherine before I arrive, including identifying any distant cousins, would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

The latest online record available is the 1901 and 1911 Census and some of the family may well be recorded on it and likely still living in the home place (if it is still habitable).

You could use your trip to search through the Valuation Records in the Valuation Office, Dublin. This would only take a short time and might give you a clue as to whom paid the land rates up to the 1980s and following from the Griffith's Valuation. You can learn more HERE

    Best wishes
