Hello.

My name is Daniel Peter O’Haire of Denver, Colorado, USA, age 61.

My father was William Peter O’Haire, born September 2, 1921 in New York City.

His brothers were Jack O’Haire and George O’Haire, also born in New York City.

Their father (my grandfather) was William O’Haire of Ballinrobe, County Mayo, Ireland.

He died  November 30, 1943 and was buried in St. Raymond’s Cemetary.

I am told that the name was Haire before the 1916 Rebellion but was changed to O’Haire at that time.

Their mother (my grandmother) was Bridget Carrol of Cloghan, County Offaly, Ireland.

She died January 2, 1941 and was buried in St. Raymond’s Cemetary.

I would love to discover any long lost relatives that I might have in Ireland and  to document my Irish ancestry.

This likely the 1901 census record for William and his family. Looks like the National Archives has all family members recorded twice but when you look at the actual image of the census record, they are listed once.

In 1911, only two of the children are living with the mother. They live in Carrowmore townland, Kilmainmore civil parish near Ballinrobe.http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002956934/

I will see if I can find Bridget Carroll.

I found this 1901 census record for a Carroll family who lived outside Cloghan in a townland called Galros. There is a 14 year old Bridget  in the family. Is this possibly your family?

I did some more checking and may have additional info on your family. I looked at death index records for Haires in the Ballinrobe area between 1896 and 1901. Since the census showed a 4 year old child and Ellen a widow, I made the assumption that her husband died between 1896 and early 1901. The only record I located was for a Michael Haire born 1847 and died in early 1901. The death was recorded in the April June quarter but likely occurred in March right before the census was taken on March 31st. I then went and looked for a marriage record for a Michael Haire married to an Ellen and found an 1875 marriage of a Michael Haire to an Ellen Purcell ( see 2nd index record below). I then went to www.familysearch.org  and looked baptismal index records for children of Michael Haire and Ellen Purcell. I found three children all born before William. Catherine (June 1, 1876), Bridget (June 8, 1878) and Mary (March 26, 1880). Mary's record specifically mentioned Carrowmore. I'm guessing that the Church records stopped in 1880 which explains why there were no records for the younger children.

Let me know if this information matches what you know about your family.

  • Hello Daniel-

My name is Mary Trekell and I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  My William O'Hare immigrated to the US and settled in Louisville, Kentucky.  He had sisters that also came to Louisville.  I was able to find a baptismal for Ellen O'Hare (one of the sisters) from Cregduff, Ballinrobe, County Mayo.  I have been in Cregduff last year.  I also have the land records.  William and the girl's father is Michael O'Hare and their mother is Mary MacHugh.  There was one child of theirs that stayed in Ireland and his name was John.  John married a Kate Manion and had a lot of kids.  Contact me...sounds like we may be related.  We just have to figure out the common ancestor.  I don't mind sharing.
