Hi

My name is Maggie and I am from Australia.

I am trying to trace my grandfather Phillip Joseph Doyle born around 1878 in Durrow. It says Kings County on the documentation that I have, but I understand that it is now called Offaly.

I cannot find a birth certificate so have guessed his date of birth from his marriage certificate - he was married in St Kilda, Victoria, Australia.

His fathers name: Patrick Doyle,   his mothers name: Mary Ann Walsh.

I have not been able to find any information on him in Ireland. I am new to this so would appreciate all or any help that I can get.

Thank you Maggie

  • Rootsireland has the baptism of Philip Doyle to Patrick Doyle and Mary Walsh in 1878 in Offaly. (pay to view). The likely civil registration that matches that was registered in Tullamore, Offaly, Apr ? Jun 1878 Volume 3, page 734.

So you can either view the baptism on rootsireland, or buy a copy of the civil birth cert. Or both.

You can order a photocopy of the birth cert from GRO Roscommon for ?4 per certificate. Put the place, year, quarter (where there is one), volume & page number on the application form (anywhere). http://www.groireland.ie/ You have to post or fax the form to them but they will e-mail the copy certificate to you if you wish. Tick the relevant box on the form.

With the townland where the family lived, you may be able to pick them up in Griffiths Valuation and also in the 1901 census.
