Thomas Coughlan may have lied about his age, in order to enter the military. Married to Bridget Barry (no record as yet). Many of his children's baptismal records indicated his current rank in the Dragoons.

After retirement in Quebec, he was given land by the government in Wickham, Drummond, Quebec, Canada.

The records I have relating to his time in Ireland mention the following: Moystown, Ferbane, Wheery Parish in Kings County, Offaly, Ireland.

There was another Coughlan that signed up for the service on the same day. Thomas listed his own age as 17, Edward listed his age as 18. I haven't found any more about Edward Coughlan.

I hope to learn more about Thomas' time in Ireland.

  • Hello Liana and welcome to Ireland Reaching Out.

Liana have you done your DNA, the reason I ask is there are lots of Coughlans in Offaly and around the Ferbane area.

Records back that far are going to be difficult to find, do you have any idea of their parents names.

Parish records for Ferbane begin 1819 and you can look them up on The National Library of Ireland Parish Records for free. Link attached.

Also Irishgenealogy.ie is another free site you can look up.

On Facebook also there are some Offaly Genealogy sites you could join them.

  • Thank you for all the good information. I haven't found the marriage record yet for Thomas Coughlan and Bridget Barry. Since he was in the military (stationed in Quebec area), I've been looking in the records there. He stated his age as 17 when he joined the British military (who knows if he lied, and was actually younger). I am guessing he was not married in Ireland before he joined the service.

I will use the links you sent me.
