Hello,

My name is Ken O'Hearn, from Nova Scotia,Canada and I am looking for any information on my relatives from Shinrone,Co.Offaly. My great grandfather was born in Shinrone,in 1862.His surname was Hearns before immigrating to Canada, when he changed it to O'Hearn. He left Ireland, around 1888-1890,with a sister Ellen. He had 2 brothers and 3 sisters, who remained in Ireland,as far as I know. Would like to be able to connect with any living relatives,if possible.

Any help or leads would be appreciated.

Thank you,

  Ken O'Hearn

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked the online Irish phone book and did not see any Hearns records in Co. Offaly.

You did not mention the name of your great-grandfather. I did locate an 1862 baptismal record for a James Hearns with parents James and Ellen Dea. Also saw an 1865 baptismal record for an Ellen Hearns in 1865 same parents.

  • Hello Roger,

I would like to thank you for your work in locating my great grandfathers Baptism.I forgot to mention his first name-it was James and his sister was Ellen. That is also correct about the names of their parents,James Hearns(a carpenter by trade and hard to locate)and his wife Ellen Day/Dea. As far as I know, there were 2 brothers-John Hearns-Sept.12,1849,born in Ballyhindy; Joseph Hearns-Dec.,1854,Towra and 2 more sisters-Mary Hearns-April 26,1857-Rosamine and Margaret Hearns-Oct.5,1859-Rosamine.

I was wondering if you could give me any ideas about how I might be able to trace forward any possible living relatives in Ireland today. As far as I know,James Hearns and sister,Ellen, were the only ones going to Canada and the rest of brothers and sisters remained in Ireland.

    Thank you again,

    Ken O'Hearn

I would look at the 1901 and 1911 censuses for Hearns (or other spelling) records to see if you can find any siblings who stayed. Here is a link to the online Irish phone book  Use the Residential Tab
