My 2x great grandfather--William Henry DeLacy or Delacey--was born in Tullamore sometime in the 1820s.  He came to New York in 1850 or 1852, worked as a saddler and harnessmaker in Manhattan, and was drafted in 1863 into the Union army.  He married Delia Raftery (of Ballinasloe, Galway), and had several children, my great grandfather George Charles DeLacy among them.  Would be grateful for any suggestions on how to learn more about his DeLacy/Delacey family.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I assume your ancestor was a Roman Catholic? I checked Roots Ireland and did not find a William Delacy/Delacey baptismal record in Co. Offaly. Is it possible that his surname was Delaney? Here is a link to the parish register for Tullamore

  • Guess it could have been Delaney--although all the records in New York say "DeLacy" or DeLacey."  The only source of his birth is Civil War draft records--and they say Tullamore, Ireland.  Is there a Tullamore somewhere other than Offaly?  Appreciate your assistance.

There are townlands called Tullamore or Tulla More in Co. Kerry, Co. Clare and Co. Tipperary. However, it is very likely that your William came from the town in Co. Offaly. Below is the earliest baptismal record in Tullamore RC records for a William Delaney.
