Hello,

searching for relatives of my grandfather Peter Sharkey or Sharket born Ardeash June 10, 1871 and baptised in the RC parish of Ardcarn. According to his baptismal certificate (there is no civil record) his parents were Bernard(o or i) and Mary (Maria) Beirne. Witnesses on this certificate are Margaret Sharket and Patrick Haggarty.

Peter left Ireland sometime before 1895 but we cannot find his US immigration record, we believe he entered through one of the ports in Rhode Island, there are no records for him at Ellis Island or Castle Island.

I have a marriage record from Croghan parish for a Bernard Sharket and Maria Beirne with the date of 9 July 1863, no parents are listed but witnesses are John Leonard and Honor Cranston.

I have a church record for Bernard Sharket from Croghan parish stating his birthdate at 20 July 1840, child of Peter Sharket and Bridget Conway.

Mary Beirne could possibly have been the daughter of Patrick Beirne and Catherine Conlon.

Peter did not marry until he came to the US and he may have had  siblings, Elizabeth, b.1871 and John, b. 1868. We have no idea if they left Ireland.

The only CONFIRMED record is that of Peter's birth.

Thanks for reading my info and hopefully someone will know something.

Regards,

Joan Sharkey

  • Hi Joan,

Thanks for your message. Civil registration became mandatory in Ireland in 1864 so all births, deaths and marriages after this date had to be registered. Have you tried contacting the GRO to see if they can find birth records for any of Peter?s children? Here are their contact details:
