  • Hi Michael, thanks for your message and interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

Do you know much about Winifred's emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city she arrived at (e.g. New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. And perhaps even find out an exact place of origin. You may want to have a look at the US National Archives Immigration Information at the following link :

    http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

Also, are there any placenames at all on any documentation you may have relating to Winifred? If there is it may help narrow down the search.

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

  • I believe I found her passenger list in 1854 arriving in New York, but it only states she is from Ireland. Also the age doesn't match, but it is the closest one I can find to matching her. I only know she is from Roscommon Co. from a letter written to a distant relative which spoke about her a little in it. I will see if they were keeping track of immigrants at Ellis Island at that time, but I do believe they started using Ellis Island later.

It doesn't seem the passenger lists were as well documented in the mid 19th century as well as they were in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Plus, the Irish were very much considered a nuisance at this time in America and were immigrating here by the thousands. This couldn't have helped matters much.

    Thanks for your response,
