I am looking for any information on my 3rd great grandfather. His name was John Grimes and was born around the 1820's. He moved to England with his wife Mary and son John Grimes around 1850 and settled in Leicester, England. On some census forms they have his birth place as Ballygof which sounds a bit like this parrish. Others has his birth place as Roscommon. The oldest boy was born 1848. The rest of John's family were born in Leicester. Mary maiden name could have been Dixon or Dickson she was born around 1823.
My brick wall is I can not find John's parents or if he had any siblings, John and Mary's marriage and little John Birth.

I am not aware of ever coming accross the surname Grimes in Kiltulklagh Parish which takes in the three towns/villages of Balinlough, Granlahan and Cloonfad. Ther church records commenced in 1839 and there are no references to the surname Grimes up to 1880 from 1840. The names Discon and Diskin do appear. It you check National Archives of Ireland Website for Tithes name Grimes and County Roscomon - 4 records appear. For the 1901 Census only 19 names appear and even les only 6 for the 1911 census. So Grimes was not an overtly popular name in the county. I also googled townlands of Co. Roscommon but did not find any reference to Ballygof. The main concentration for the Grimes surname appears to be around Tulsk-Strokestown. It is posible some of the parishes in this area may have early birth records. You are looking for John's c. 1848. Roscommon Genealogy Centre in Strokestoown may be able to assist you. Also Find my past may have a record for John. Let me know if these leads turn up anything if not I will have to try harder. I have come accross many queries like your own from the UK where only thje county of birth is known.Sometimes The death record may give the name of John Senr's father. If so, you could then search for the death record of his father back in Ireland. If after 1864 there may well be a civil record which you may find in familysearch.org..

Hi Vic I know this is a long shot as your post is from so long ago … but my great great grandparents were John Grimes & Rosy Grimes who moved over to Leicester. There daughter Margaret grimes married my great grandfather John victory and the victory family moved to Leicester from mullingar. I am Leicester based now and am trying to trace backwards … anything you found out would be great to connect
