  • My great grandfather was born April 7, 1830.  My notes from the family report he was from the Parish of Ballykill County Galway, Ireland

It is reported that he arrived to America at Perthamboy, New Jersey and married Mary Sheehan there on Aug. 6,1856.

He died on Nov.6, 1896 and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Independence, Mo.  He was employed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Independence, Mo and Atchison, Kansas.

His wife, Mary Sheehan, was also from County Galway born March 25, 1833.  Five children were born to their union, the youngest James Bartholomew Martin, was my grandfather born in 1941 in Independence, Mo.

  • Here is a baptism record of Edward Martin `835 Galway from www.rootsireland.ie/ (subscription site): Name: Edward Martin Date of Birth: Date of Baptism: 26-Oct-1835 Address: Not Recorded Parish/District: TYNAGH Gender: County Co. Galway Denomination: Roman Catholic Father: Martin John Mother: (No Record) Marie Occupation: Not Recorded Sponsor 1 / Informant 1: Logue Lucas Sponsor 2 / Informant 2: Logue Margaret

There are 2 for Mary Sheehan neither of which is exact: Name: Mary Sheehan Date of Birth: Date of Baptism: 6-Mar-1836 Address: Not Recorded Parish/District: TYNAGH Gender: County Co. Galway Denomination: Roman Catholic Father: Sheehan Thomas Mother: (No Record) Anne Occupation: Not Recorded Sponsor 1 / Informant 1: Burke James Sponsor 2 / Informant 2: Burke Maira Name: Mary Sheehan Date of Birth: Date of Baptism: 20-Dec-1831 Address: Dungora Parish/District: KINVARA Gender: Female County Co. Galway Denomination: Roman Catholic Father: Bartholomew Sheehan Mother: Mary Finn Occupation: Sponsor 1 / Informant 1: Peter Kilkelly Sponsor 2 / Informant 2: Bridget Conway

I guess the 1836 is at least in March - the Sheehan tree on ancestry has 1836.

You might like to search the free sites Tithe Applotments & the early Irish Censuses to see if they are there.

There are 2 marriages of John Martin to a MARY (not Marie) in Galway 1823 - both are from Tynagh. Unfortunately Tynagh & Kinvarra are not near Ballynahinch but these are the only records I could find.
