I hope I am in the right parish for Margaret Cryan. What I know of her, my g-g grandmother,(from census records and her marriage certificate) is that she was born in Roscommon in the late 1820s, Her father's name was Daniel Cryan. Margaret moved to Durham, England, married a Patrick Gilmore from County Down and lived in Leeds for sometime before moving to New jersey in the 1880s. She died in 1911.

I had never heard of a connection to Boyle until I came across the webpage of one Lyle Stanhke    (http://members.tripod.com/havana_2/index-74.htmle). He (now deceased) had a Cryan family history page which seems to fill in the back story of Margaret Cryan. That led me to believe that Margaret Cryan was from Boyle, and her mother was a Margaret McDonagh.  Daniel Cryan apparently left Margaret and her two brothers in ireland and emigarted to Canada. (I'm not sure whether her mother went with him.  I don't know who raised Margaret before her move to England, and I don't know how to figure that out.

I hope I am right in thinking that I have found Margaret Cryan's home.

I went to Roots Ireland which is a pay site to view records. There is an 1826 baptismal record in Boyle RC records for a Margaret Cryan born to Daniel Cryan and a mother whose surname was McDonagh. When I added Margaret to the mother's name the record did not match.  This means the mother's name was other than Margaret. I think it is likely that this baptismal record is for your Margaret Cryan.

Go to www.rootsireland.ie and register. I think it costs around 5 euros to look at a record.

I could not find Daniel Cryan in the 1833 Tithe Applotment listings for Boyle or the 1856 griffiths Valuation listings for Boyle.

You can use Roots to search for a marriage record for Daniel or the baptismal records for Margaret's brothers.

  • Hello Roger, Thank you for the response, and the revelation that her mother's name was not Margaret. I had seen the baptismal record for Margaret Cryan, but am not sure how I concluded her mother's name was Margaret. Probably from Lyle Stanhke's site, which I have found  very useful. I do use Rootsireland, but also have relied on the work has done about the family of Daniel Cryan. I hope Rootsireland helps me as well with my other lines, McCanns and Dillons (Tyrone, I think), Gilmore and Flannigan (Down), Hewitt, not sure where.

It's good to know the Boyle connection. Thanks again.
