I am trying to find information about my great grand father "Patrick Joseph Tiernan" his origins, family or anything else. Patrick was born in Boyle, Roscommon c.1863. He emigrated to England and ended up in Yorkshire sometime between then and 1882 where after a spell in the army he became a coal miner. From a marriage certificate he indicates that his father's name was "Michael" who was a farmer, other than that I have no other information. I appreciate it's a bit vague, I'm just hoping that someone may be able to point me in the right direction.

Civil registration of births in Ireland did not start until 1864. I checked www.roscommon.rootsireland.ie which is a pay site and they do have an 1861 baptism for a Patrick Tiernan whose father was Michael Tiernan. Not sure if this is your relative but you may want to check it out.

Thank you for your reply, I found the Church Baptism record on your suggested site, but I'm not sure if it takes me much further. The information it provided showed a baptism date of 17th March 1861 in the Parish of Ardcarne/Cootehall, father "Michael Tiernan", mother "Mary Martin". It also shows two sponsors/informants of John Carty and Mary Martin.
Excuse my ignorance but would Mary Martin be her maiden name, two Christian names, or does it indicate they were not married? Also what is the role of a sponsor/informant,

Martin would be the mother's maiden name. I assume they were married. The sponsor/informant is comparable to a godparent of today. The second Mary Martin was probably a cousin.
