I'm trying to find the family of James Meara/Mara who was born in Limerick circa 1820. He possibly worked on the Shannon because, when he married in Athlone, County Roscommon circa 1850 (to Mary Brennan), his address in the parish record is recorded as 4 Dragon, which may have been a boat.

James and Mary had a daughter, Mary Ann, who was baptised in the same church, St Peter's, Athlone in 1851. The family moved to England sometime between the baptism (1851) and the 1861 England Census where they were living in Wiltshire having previously lived in Dean, Hampshire where two more children were born. James died in 1864 again back in Hampshire.

His wife and children moved to the north west of England (Mossley Lancashire) after his death. His widow remarried there and stayed until her death.

  • David,

4 Dragon should read 4th Dragoon, Jame`s regiment.  The 4th Light Dragoons were stationed at Victoria Barracks, Athlone in 1850.
