My great great grandmother was Celia Broderick born about 1842 and died 7 June 1894. She married Bernard Greene (b. 19 June 1834) on 12 February 1867. On the marriage certificate it claims her father is William Broderick.

I found birth certificate for Celia Broderick born 14 January 1843 but the parents are Laughlin Broderick and Brigid Flanagan. I know his name isn't William but Celia is the only birth under these parents' names. I found a family with parents listed as William Broderick and Brigid Flanagan. Their children are Michael (1833), John (1835), Malachy (1835), Brigid (1847), William (1851) and Catherine (1851). Could William Broderick and Brigid Flanagan be the same people as Laughlin Broderick and Brigid Flanagan?

I have seen this happen before as on my great grandmother's birth cert it had her mum's maiden name as Croughan while on her marriage it was Crawley. I believe her mum's maiden name was Crawley as it was Crawley on her siblings baptism records.

I have also failed to find a death record for Laughlin while I have found one for William Broderick. What do you think? Is it possible that Laughlin is the same person as William?

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your message.

It is difficult to say for sure but it does seem like it may be a transcription error or an incorrect recording. I did a search for Celia Broderick on familysearch and the results that came back showed Celia Broderick Green?s children. There is a William but no Laughlin and going by the naming pattern in Ireland there would have been a son named after Celia?s father.

It may be an idea to try and look at the original birth record to see if there is any clues on it. Most Catholic records are still held locally so you could try writing to the local parish priest for possible assistance. Here is a link to the contact details for Castlerea (Kilkeevin) parish:

  • Thank you for your message and the contact details. I'm certain her father's name is William. I know Bridget Flangan would be a common name but the unusual thing is that Laughlin and Bridget only have one child which would have been uncommon for the time. This is why I believe Laughlin and William could be the same people. Laughlin could even be his middle or first name. For instance, my father always goes by his middle name rather than first name so maybe that's what has caused the confusion. I am living around the Castlerea area and am friendly with the local parish priest so I'll see if I can view the record. Once again, thank you for the reply.
