Michael Lowe (aka Loo), a son of Patrick Lowe and Bridget (Dolan) Lowe was baptised in 1842 in Knockcroghery, Co. Roscommon. It is possible that Michael had a younger sister, Mary, baptised at the same location in 1845. Both of these baptisms were reported by the County Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company. The baptismal sponsors of MIchael were Peter Hussey and Mary Dolan. Mary Lowe's baptismal sponsors were Michael Diffly and Bridget Dogherty (sp?). Michael emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts in 1859 and married Elizabeth Hickey, possibly of County Meath, in Woburn, Massachusetts on 19 April 1868 at Saint Charles Borromeo church.

I have no other record of the Lowe family in Knockcroghery and am searching for possible relatives. I do know of a Lowe family of Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim but have never been able to determine if there is a same family connection. Furthermore, I have been unable find any any additional detail of the Dolan family connection.

Anyone in a position to provide further assistance in my effort to find additional information on the Co. Roscommon Lowes is kindly invited to contact me.

  • Hi

    Thank you for your message.

Please post as much information as you can regarding the family you are researching - as the more information you provide, the more likely it is that volunteers can assist or advice you.

Remember to include information on their emigration and any sources i.e. Griffiths Valuation/familySearch - that you may have already used.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

    Genealogy Support

  • Hello, I am one of the Lowe's from Carrick and currently trying to trace our roots back to Roscommon, as the only Lowe's in Leitrim were us and another quite large clan in Carrigallen, but they are Church of Ireland and we Catholic, so assuming, for now, not related.

On the Roscommon side, we found following Lowe's listed in 1835 Tithe who are all concentrated in quite a small area as per map at http://goo.gl/maps/LDwHm

    LOWE LAND per 1835 TITHE

    LEITRIM 1835

    • Lisnabrack, Carrick - Wm Lowe (my 2nd great-grandfather)

    ROSCOMMON 1835

    • Legvoy, Gardenstown - Widow & John Lowe
    • Croghan - Martin Lowe
    • Killappoge, Croghan - Martin Lowe
    • Portaghard, Frenchpark - Jas Lowe
    • Kilnamanagh, Tulsk - Patt & Jabez Lowe
    • Cloonmahaan , Elphin - James Low
    • Lisroyne, Strokestown - Patt Lowe
    • Knockarush, Boyle - Low
    • Doon, Sheegorey - Js, Jno, Micl & Pat Low

We believe legvoy/Gardenstown (Killucan) is our ancestral home and a good chance that all others are related, but having quite a job trying to corroborate that!?

That picture remains remarkably consistent with the Griffith Valuation which followed some 20 years later except a Michael Lowe joined the picture up in Lisbride, Roscommon. That is quite close to Knockcroghery, but that aside we have not found any land records for your part of Roscommon.

Not sure if any of that helps but hopefully so.

Also up front, I discounted relationship with Carrigallen branch on account on religious grounds, but know we are on very shaky ground there, for the first Lowe's (we have found) in Roscommon, arrived on the back of 1670 Cromwellian conquest land awards, and were of course protestant, so some conversions must have happened along the way. You'll find a copy of that first land grant at -

  • Regarding any info on the Lowe family from Knockcroghery, Roscommon: I would like to receive any info that is found on Michael Lowe (son of Patrick and Bridget) who married Elizabeth Hickey of County Meath. They are my great-grandparents. Thanks for any help you can give.
