My husband & I just finished a tour and will be renting a car today and driving to Athlone. I have ancestors from Kiltoom or Ballybay, not quite sure. Surnames Moran & Keogh. Also have Kilduff from Killare, Westmeath so picked Athlone as being central. My families from Ireland all left between 1830-1860 so I don't know of any existing descendants living there.

  • Hi Judy

Just saw your message.    When you get to Athlone if you contact The Drum Heritage Centre.  I will attach details below.   Drum is another Parish close to Athlone, though not in the Kiltoom area,  but the Heritage Centre is a good base for contacts.   The name Moran is quite common around the Athlone area and the name Keogh is a name common in Taughmaconnell Parish which is close to Kiltoom.   There is a local shop in Kiltoom called Kiltoom Stores, so maybe calling in there might be a help too as they would know all the locals.     The name Kilduff is common enough around these parts too, though particularly in the Parish of Moore however yours appear to be Mullingar direction.    I will contact some Kilduffs I know and see if they have connections in that area.  If I think of anything else which might help, I will let you know.

I WILL SEND THE DETAILS FOR DRUM IN A COUPLE OF MINUTES.   I RANG THEM MYSELF JUST TO LET THEM KNOW YOU MIGHT CALL.   DRUM IS ONLY A FEW MILES OUTSIDE ATHLONE TOWN.   I WILL GIVE YOU THE FULL ADDRESS AND DETAILSL

  • Hi Roger,

My son and I are members of the Moore History Group, though we live in Ballinasloe and I was born in Ballinasloe.  Michael my son is the research expert and is fantastic at it but studying at the moment for his Leaving Cert next week.   We have a particular interest in the Ballinasloe, Taughmaconnell, Moore, Drum and Co Offaly areas having the majority of our ancestors from there so we are pretty good with where and how to research any family in these areas.   Michael helped with the recording of the headstones in the Parish of Moore (Kilbegley, Moore South and Clonburren) so he is familiar with many of these even without looking them up on historicgraves.ie.   Of course with Kellys, Naughtons, Ward,  Dolans and Tumultys in our Tree we have come across many connections which might help others.  Many of our relatives emigrated to Australia and led interesting lives over there, so Michael is a whizz at research in Australia having done it all   We both have also done a DNA test with Ancestry.  So Roger that's us!!    I know what it is like looking for information and not being able to find it or not  knowing where to look, so when I see somebody looking for information I like to help if I can.

All the best to you and kind regards from Ballinasloe.

  • Thank you Mary! We will definitely stop by the Drum Heritage Centre! I also have Kelly,  Flynn, Fleury, Laughlin or  Loughlin surnames. While my 2nd great grandmother was Mary Moran, after her death at age 34 in 1872, her husband, Peter Blow (or Blois) married a Catherine Naughton and had two more children.

John Kilduff had a son, James, who I believe was named for a brother of John. John's father was also named John Kilduff. Several of my family and I have done the Ancestry DNA as well as some of my 2nd and 3rd cousins.  I live in California. Very interesting to see how widespread the Irish people have become!

  • Michael and I have done the Ancestry DNA test.     There are Kilduffs on my husband's side of the family so Michael is matching with some.   My email address is mary_pat_dolan@yahoo.ie if you would like to share any info, and I can check, just in case we might be a match!!!!    Have you any idea where the other names you mention Kelly etc come from?     Have you seen the new addition to Ancestry called "genetic communities"?    Have a look and see does it narrow down your Irish Ancestry to a particular region.

    All the best

  • Mary:

You and your son are doing great work! We have a Marie Monaghan on our list as the parish liaison for Moore parish. I assume you work with Marie? We get a lot of messages for Ballinasloe and the southern Roscommon area. Can I refer these messages to you? Do you have an Ireland Reaching Out e-mail address? We try to keep our messages within the system so to speak.

I live in Maryland and just returned from Dublin on Monday. We had an Ireland Reaching Out volunteer meeting in Dublin last Friday.

  • The Eamonn Leonard we met today in Kiltoom must not have been the right guy. We stopped at Kiltoom Stores and the man there said he was not a local but that he knew where Eamonn lived and directed us on. Eamonn looked puzzled when we showed up on his doorstep but he gallantly did his best! He called a man named Willie who was a deacon at the local church. Willie was able to look up the baptismal records for the two Moran girls born in 1835 & 1838 and give me the name of the townland the Morans were from: Coolagarry. Also, that the sponsors for Mary were John Fihily and Mary Craven. Bridget also had a Fihily as one of her sponsors. Eamonn and his son also took us to a local Kiltoom cemetery that was very old, overgrown and in bad shape. We tromped about trying to read the inscriptions without much success. After that we drove over to Coolagarry, not much there to see other than some farms and houses.

By that time it was after lunch and we didn't make it to the Drum Heritage Centre. We went to Clonmacnoise and my hubby, good sport that he is, wanted to check out the Tullamore DEW place! Tomorrow he would like to visit Derryglad Folk & Heritage Museum. We have to head back to Dublin in the afternoon.

We have really enjoyed our visit to Ireland!  I am already looking forward to a return trip! My email is judyf43@hotmail.com

  • Hi Roger

I click in pretty regularly to Ireland Reaching Out - I really love it and always check the Moore, Roscommon and Ballinasloe areas so sometimes if I see somebody looking for info I like to point them in the right direction.   I usually take an interest in names that are familiar to me or perhaps connected to us in some way.   However Marie Costello Monaghan is the expert on the area and the person with the most knowledge of the area and the people, and the person with the most contacts.  She is fantastic at research and the Moore History Group is a credit to her and many others.    I do not live in the area, I live in the Town of Ballinasloe and do not know too many people locally.   However please feel free to email me anytime if you think Michael and I might be able to help, if we can, we certainly will.   My email is mary_pat_dolan@yahoo.ie

All the best and well done to you and everybody here.
