I have traced my Ancestors back to a couple who moved to the UK, Stone, Staffordshire around 1850 to 1860.

  • James Maley born 1832 in Kiltullagh, Ireland and
  • Mary born 1834  in French Wark? Roscommon, Ireland

Any information or know relatives in that area would be good

thanks

Ian.

  • Re Mary from French wark (?) there?s a Frenchlawn and a Frenchpark in Roscommon. Named after the French family, whose home was in Roscommon, made famous by William Percy French the poet, painter and song writer. He wrote the Mountains of Mourne, Abdul Abulbul Emir, Slattery?s mounted foot etc.

  • Hi Ian & Elwyn
    Lovely song Mountains of Mourne!
I've had quite a search for James & Mary - not too successful I'm afraid!
The closest match for James on www.rootsireland.ie/ is:
Name: James Omally Date of Birth: 18-Feb-1832
    Date of Baptism: 22-Feb-1832
    Address: Not Recorded Parish/District: LOUGHREA
    Gender: County Co. Galway
    Denomination: Roman Catholic
Father: O Mally Michael Mother: Concannon Elizabeth
    Occupation: Not Recorded
    Sponsor 1 /
    Informant 1: O Shaughnessy Thomas
Loughrea is a few miles up the road from the Kil parishes.
Mary was just as elusive - the search involved trying all letters of the alphabet for the surname but nothing came up for French Park R C or Civil parishes.
    This was the closest:
Mary McGee Date of Birth: 12-Mar-1835
    Date of Baptism: 11-Nov-1111
    Address: Not Recorded Parish/District: CROGHAN
    Gender: Female County Co. Roscommon
    Denomination: Roman Catholic
Father: John McGee Mother: Brigid McDermott
    Occupation:
    Sponsor 1 /
    Informant 1: Michael Quinn Sponsor 2 /
    Informant 2: Winifred Haly
Croghan looks not too far from French Park
There are 8 Maleys in the 1821 Irish Census (free online
    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/)
Galway records aren't included in the 1831, 41 or 51 censuses!!
There are also 9 in the Tithe Applotments 1826-33 (free http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/)
No Maleys in either parish in Griffiths Valuation 1848-64.
I tried other translations of Kiltolock as in the English Census & got a James Malley 1822 TURLOUGH , Mayo??!!

  • Hi

Thanks for the responses, some good information, The Children of the two that I am trying to trace, consistantly kept the name James in the family through the generations.

I will dig further and see if there is any other information around to see what there story was upon their arrival into England. Interestingly they came to live 5 miles from where I live now.

Hi Ian, i think we we have common ancestry: James Maley born ‘Kiltolock’ and Mary born ‘French Park’ according to 1861 census. Their son James was my great grandfather. Who are you descended from? Kind regards, Helen.
