My Gt Grandfathers name was John Michael Freeman 1846-1895

His father was Patrick Freeman 1804 or 1813 depending on which record you're reading..He was a tenant farmer in Corracoggil Street.

The eldest son is Thomas 1836-1920..On his christening record Catherine Mc Cormick is listed as his mother.Thomas also continued on on the farm after his father died.

I have not been able to find a marraige for Patrick and Catherine but did find a burial record for them and they are buried  in Lisacul church graveyard.I dont know if there are headstones for them.i have written to the priest but had no reply.

There is a 10 year gap between Thomas and John Michael so I thought there might be more children. The siblings I have found so far are Bridget 1852-1927 Catherine  1854-1926 ( DNA match), Patrick 1855-1896 ( DNA match) and Elizabeth 1857-1928

There are records missing between 1840 and 1849 but when I looked on NLI 1835 to 1840 I could not find anymore children in that time frame either.

Can someone please advise where I can find anymore children and a marraige for Patrick and Catherine please.

Thankyou in advance

  • Deb:

I have been searching the subscription site Roots Ireland and I'm not able to find the baptismal record for Thomas nor the records for the four children born in the 1850s. I also did not find a marriage record anywhere in Roscommon or Mayo.

Can you let me know where you located the baptismal records for the five children in your message? Thanks!

One of our volunteers, Shane Wilson,  pointed out that looking at Liscaul church (Christ the King) there does not appear to be a graveyard attached to the church. I went on Findagrave.com and there is a cemetery called Kilrooan about 1.5 miles southeast of Lisacul church.

  • Hi Deb,

I got my contact on the ground to check this out for you:

Of your charity pray for Bridget Freeman who died December 17 1884 Age 74 Years and her husband Patrick Freeman of Coroughogiel who died May 13 1889 Age 76 Years.

Erected by their children Kate, Margaret, Thomas & Patrick.

There was a 2nd headstone in the same plot - it read:

Sacred Heart of Jesus Pray for the Soul of Elizabeth McGlynn (Nee Freeman) who died September 14 1928 Age 71 Years and her sister Bridget Dignan who died April 17 1927

Erected by Bridget and Mary E. Kievney.

This is Patricks Death Cert. Please note the one above Patrick's for Martin Freeman Age 12 both of Curraghogill

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

My contact relayed to me the Headstones in this Graveyard are not in the best of condition, much overgrowth, etc. The graveyard my not be currently in use for new burials and there may be many much older graves noting one went back to 1790. A sign was also noted near the Graveyard - "Bothar na mairmh" meaning The road of the dead.

I have not cross checked with information given above to see if this family plot relates to your ancestors.

  • Hi Martin  This is fabulous information !

Well this is very interesting and raises further questions as i have Patrick Freeman with Catherine Mc Cormick in first son Thomas's baptism record so assumed that was his wife yet this Patrick Freeman is Buried with Bridget Freeman nee Flanagan. I do thin that Elizabeth Mc Glynn and Bridget Duignan are mine too...

What is the name of this Graveyard please?

Thankyou so much for this information.I appreciate the help  now i just have to figure out what it means to me as i have this same DOD for Patrick Freeman but wrong wife.

    Hi Rodger,

I had good help from a friend who lives in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Even though one of my own Great Grandfathers originated in this region it is not a locality I am very familiar with.

    Regards,

    Martin.

And for a quick note for Deb,

See attached 1901 Census attached for Freeman,

It looks like the family of Thomas who is mentioned on the Memorial

Also Elizabeth McGlynn (Nee) Freeman's daughter Mary E McGlynn's husband's name was Kneafsy in 1901 Census Neafsy.

    My contact couldn't make it out properly on headstone but felt it wasn't Keavney;

  • Hi Martin

Thankyou for sending this through..Yes this is my family. This is awesome.

Now i just have to try and work out where i have gone wrong with my GT GT Grandfather Patrick Freeman  as i was going on the Baptism for Thomas Freeman 1836 and on this it has mother as Catherine Mc Cormick which is different to the Bridget Freeman who is buried with Patrick Freeman and also daughters Elizabeth and Bridget Duignan. I do have a DNA match with  2 of his children. Patrick 1872 and Ellen( Nellie) Freeman 1883

Thomas Freeman married Bridget Duignan and his sister Bridget Freeman married a Patrick Duignan.!

This is the christening i have for Thomas Freeman.

    Thomam Freeman

The Census of Ireland document you have sent through is the right family i think! but it also puts Thomas born in 1841 not 1836.

Youve mentioned Kneafsy so i will look that up but there is a daughter of Elizabeth McGlynn ,Beatrice who married an Andrew Keaveney.

This is the most inroads i have made in a long time and Ive been searching for 17 years. i very much appreciate yours and Rogers help. Please also thank your friend for looking for the headstones for me.

     Thankyou

    Deb

  • Hi Martin

Thanks for sending all these links through to me..I only had the marraige for Bridget Freeman and Patrick Duignan so i didnt have any of the others but they are definitely my family and i have DNA matches to some of them.

Do you think i have the wrong baptism for Thomas? Could mother Catherine Mc Cormick have died and Patrick remarried to Bridget Flanagan?

My Gt Grandfather John Micheal Freeman was born 1846 but i dont have his Baptism, Just going on his age on death certificate in 1895 of 48 years.

I will contact Roscommon geanealogy and see if they will do a search for children of Patrick and Bridget for me.

I had all but given up on getting any further with my Freemans so thanks so much for your help.

  • Hi Roger,

I know the person who put in this. Only spend time on it if you actually know. He is a better researcher than I am. Probably just chancing his arm. He has already visited this Graveyard but so many headstones are so hard to get to never mind read he is hoping to get to someone who actually knows - probably a local who is an expert.

  • Hi Roger

I think the Flynns are connected to the Freemans too as there was a Lawrence Flynn and Maria King.who were a witness on the Baptism for Thomas Freeman 1836 in Loughglynn, Lisacul that i have ( that may not be right..still havent figured that out) in so dont know if this helps or not.

  • I'm not really a party to this conversation, but last night I spent about an hour pouring over the PDF version of the commemorative book of the Lisacul Gathering 2013. My great-grandmother was from Tibohine nearby and there were a few mentions of families from Tibohine, especially Sharkey, some of whom I grew up with here in New Jersey. I didn't find anything that helps my research, but it was sobering to read the names of so many who left for either the UK or the USA. I just want to say thanks to all the volunteers who help with this site!

  • Hi All,

Just to add a bit to this thread. I am descended from Patrick Freeman of Barnahesker, Aghamore, in the adjacent parish and share a common Freeman ancestor with Deb who would have been born abt. 1565 (both Deb’s brother and I are Y DNA tested) our next more distant matches that we link with further back in time, but don’t share the Freeman surname with, come from Co Donegal and are of Scottish origins.

We are in a cluster of 45 Freeman individuals who live within a 16km radius. This is the highest concentration of Freemans in Ireland in the 1850’s.

If there are any direct male descendants from any of the Freeman families of Mayo/Roscommon who would be willing to take the Family Tree Big Y 700 test to help further the research, I am quite happy to pay for it. If so, get in touch!

  • Hi

Read with interest. I can’t comment on Freemans in the area prior to the early 1920s, but my father James Freeman born 1961 of Loughlynn was 1 of 13 children of Thomas Freeman bn Castlerea (Father was Martin Freeman, who we understand to have originated in the US, with links to Detroit) and Agnes Freeman (bn Ballyhaunis). All but 2 of their children moved to England in the 1970s. Our Grandfather Thomas passed away in 2003 and along with many of the Freemans of the area, is buried at Cultiboe cemetery in Loughlynn.

  • Hi,

I have researched your family back to the 1790's and have an extensive tree showing how most of the Freemans buried in Cultiboe Cememtry are all related. I'm happy to share what I have if you'd like to get in touch with me at freed65@xtra.co.nz

    Kind regards,

    Peter
