My link to County Roscommon is through the family Connaughton later anglicised to Connington.
Timothy Connaughton born 1813 Roscommon, Ireland, his wife Ann Gormly born 1820 Ireland, his children were Margaret born Roscommon 1842 Catherine born in Old Swan Knotty Ash, Liverpool 1844, James born 1846 Old Swan, Liverpool and John born 1858 in St Helens, Lancashire although this is from 1861 census, the 1851 census states they were all born in Roscommon but this is doubtful. Ann Gormly had a brother called John born approx 1820 Ireland also.
They first appear in Liverpool in 1841 Timothy, Ann and John Gormly. The next census 1851 in Knotty Ash (you heard of the Diddymen and their jam butty mine right?) includes the first three children and in 1861 all of the children are living together in St Helens Lancashire with no sign of the parents.
Their daughter Catherine Connington born in 1844 is my GG grandmother on my mothers side. Her brother James ended up in Canada. If anyone has any connection to this family or has any information on exactly where they came from in Roscommon I would love to hear from you.

Hi Gillian
Here is a record from www.rootsireland.ie/ (subscription site)
It's Thomas rather than Timothy but there were no Timothy records; there was also a Thaddeus in 1815.
For Anne in Roscommon there is an Anna Gormley born 1820 & Annes in 1823 & 24.
The Liptrott public member tree on ancestry has Ann's surname as Rattican born c 1821 Roscommon
but I couldn't find that record either.
There are 3 Connaughtons in Roscommon in the Tithe Applotments (free site)
Connaughton Peter Cloonroghan Elphin Roscommon
1835 Connaughton Pat Carrigeen Kilglass Roscommon
1833 Connaughton Dominick Cloonfelliv Kilkeevin Roscommon 1832
There are none in the early Irish censuses 1821,31,41 or 51
You might want to try Griffiths Valuation (free) www.askaboutireland.ie/ as there are 27 Connaughtons in Roscommon in the 1840's to 60's

Thanks for the reply Col. Ive noted everything down and will follow all.
The name is definitely Timothy as I have the census and my gggrandmothers marriage certificate with the father named. The Liptrot Tree I know and am in touch with as he is a distant cousin of mine but he lives in Scotland. I think he was told the information by someone else and I have never managed to find any proof either.
I recently found records on familysearch.com, of a Timothy Conoghton married to Mariae Crummy in 1839 (RC)and their daughter Bridget born in Boyle in 1840 and later a marriage in Manchester England of a Bridget Connington 1866 father Timothy a shoe maker, but it didnt quite fit in with the details I had in the census in England in 1841, 51 in which he was married to an Ann, their next child was born in 1842 so until I can find the marriage to Ann, death of Mariae or connect Bridget to my family somehow I don't know what to think.
The 1841 census in Liverpool only shows Timothy Conacton, Ann Conacton and John Gormly. Maybe we just assumed this is her brother and the Rattican name is correct, I cant remember now it was a long time ago.
I'm hoping someday someone with solid information on this family comes across this message and will contact me.Strangely my brother now lives in Fuerty, Roscommon with his wife who is originally from nearby, they met in Liverpool where she was a nurse training, married and moved over about 15 years ago. Its a small world isn't it?
Thank you so much for the searches

Gill I just searched the Irish phone book and there are 29 Connaughtons in Ireland.
It is a long shot they'll be looking on Irelandxo but you could always dash off a letter setting out your Connaughtons to see if anyone knows anything.

Wow!
Ill have a think about that, it may be better (and cheaper) to put an add in a local paper :)
I had another look at the Liptrot tree and it seems he found a baptism of a Margaret Connaughton in 1841 at St Oswalds Old Swan to Timothy Connaghton and Ann Rattican so maybe its the right track after all. I would like to find the other children now to confirm this though. Liverpool Archives may have the info I need.

Ive since done a bit more research on this and found some of the Connaughton childrens baptisms at St Oswalds church Old Swan and can confirm that the wife of Timothy Connaughton was indeed Anna Rattican born in 1821 Roscommon. I havent found a marriage for them yet, maybe it was in Ireland?

I couldn't find an Irish marriage for them I'm afraid.
