Hello

I am looking for more information on my maternal grandmother's family.

My grandmother's father (Joseph Patrick Murray) was born in Boston, USA but all of his siblings were born in Ireland and England. Joe's parents were both born in Ireland and my grandmother told me the are from Co. Roscommon.

I don't have any parish information, all I have are names and dates. I will supply what I know and hopefully someone can help me?!

Known information:

Joe's father is John Francis Murray born abt 1858. Joe's mother is Mary J. O'Malley born abt 1862.

They had 3 children before arriving in America. Mary A. Murray born 1888 - John Francis Murray Jr. born 1889 - James Daniel Murray born 1891. Out of the 3 I'm not positive who was born in Ireland and who in England, my documents have a few different cities listed. They had 5 children in America.

John (sr)'s father is Daniel Murray born abt 1833. I believe his wife to be Mary Millet born abt 1836.

If anyone can help me and needs some more information I will supply whatever I have to help you help me :)

I have some other names and dates that I've tried to piece together with the documents my family has and information I have found online.

I went on Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie and found an 1830 baptismal record for a Daniel Murray in Co. Roscommon. Keep in mind that many parishes do not have records going back that far so if he was baptized in one of those churches, a record will not exist. I did find an 1838 baptismal record for a Mary Millet in St. Peters parish Athlone RC records. Roots is a pay site to view the transcription of a church record.

Although there were many John Murray baptismal records around 1858, I could not find one with parents Daniel and Mary. Civil registration started in 1864.

I then looked at the 1855-1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Roscommon. There were 7 Daniel Murrays listed. The question I have was he old enoiugh at 23 or so to be leasing land. If the answer is YES then he could be one of the seven below. The closest one to Athlone is the entry for Drum Parish.

I could not locate a Millet record in the Griffiths.

There were over 400 Mary Murray civil births from 1864-1958 in Co. Roscommon but only one was in 1888 and it was registered in the Athlone registration district. However, I could not locate a John Murray marriage to somone named Malley or O'Malley prior to 1888 which makes me wonder if they married in England and then was Mary born in England?

Let me know what questions you have. There are a lot of potential leads but no clear lead.

  • Thank you for your quick reply, Roger.

I will take a look at some of this once I get time to sit down with my documents.
