I am looking for information about Thomas Patrick Tormey, born 31 July 1825.  He immigrated to the USA in 1847 (through New York, I believe) and settled in Scot Depot, Putnam County, West Virginia.  His sisters joined him there sometime after 1865.  Family stories say he was from County Roscommon, but I have no concrete information about him before 1847.  Would be grateful for any help in this matter.

  • Hi

Do you know much about his emmigration? Often more information was given at the point of arrival. Have you tried checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) for Thomas or his relatives in Ireland? The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

You could also try posting as much information as you can regarding this family. The more information you post, including what sources you may have already used, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers or other users may be able to assist or advise you.

Some records for County Roscommon are available for a fee from:

  • I too am looking for Thomas Patrick Tormey.  He is my G-G-G-grandfather.  He had a brother named Michael (Mick) J Tormey who married Margaret Caul [not sure of spelling] in Ireland.  Michael and Margaret left Liverpool aboard the John Garrow and arrived in New York on 02 Jun 1846.  They brought their two oldest children, John and Biddy with them.  The family story that the family comes from Roscommon comes from these two children’s descendants.

Thomas and Michael’s father’s given name was Caramack or Cormick, according to Thomas’s marriage and Michael’s death records in the U.S.

I have searched the Griffith’s Valuation records and the vital records and census records on several sites (U.S. and Ireland sites) but can find no records of any of these people.  It seems that Tormey is not a common name, as there are not many records for Tormeys.

Michael’s wife, Margaret’s, mother was Bridget Burns [unsure of spelling].  Margaret's father was James or John Caul.  Both immigrated to the U.S.

There are few old records for these people in the U.S.  I have not been able to find an actual death record for Thomas in the U.S.  I have not been able to find any naturalization records for any of these people either.

I would appreciate any help that anyone could offer in locating records of these family members.  Thank you.

  • Hi, Thomas Patrick Tormey was my 4th great uncle! I descent from Mick Tormey and his wife, Margaret Coll. I have a little info on the Coll's and Cormack Tormey, buth nothing before that. They did come across on the sJohn Garrow, but Margaret actually gave birth on the ship to twins, as on their birth record it states: "at sea."

Thomas Patrick Tormey died in 1916 in Scott Depot, W. VA and married Mary Susan Hines and they ha a son, Bernard C. He died in 1916 in Scott Depot, W. VA. I can always email you a link to my Ancestry tree if you want to view some more information on the Tormey lineage I've discovered so far.

    Thanks.

  • Thank you for replying. I still don't have any new info on Thomas or the rest of the Tormeys. I think I narrowed the immigrants on passenger lists that could be Thomas down to three, but I can't figure out which one is him. Do you know for certain that Thomas's father was Carmack? I got that off of his marriage record, but I can't find a Carmack in Ireland that could be him. I also cannot find a death record for Thomas.  I would love to correspond to you and compare notes. I'll be happy to send you my personal email if you want to correspond.

    Thanks again for your response,
