Looking for my ancester James Donnely born in Boyle?
Born abt 1833 and joined the 70th ft regiment 05/08/1852 and went to east india and then onto New Zealand on the Daniel Rankin arriving NZ 1861 to fight in the Maori wars. Was discharged in NZ 05/08/1864. I Married the widow Mcdermott in 1865 and had five more children and lived in Thames NZ as a retired army sgt and a miner. Was perhaps married first to a M N Burns so was a widower when he married Annie Mcdermott. Annie was from Dublin and had the maiden name Cullen or Callam. Some idea that his fathers name was Dennis and he had a son Dennis. Died in Thames NZ in 1914 aged 81.
Any information of his past welcome. He was my Great great grandfather and I have a lot of information of his time in NZ and am happy to share.
Cheers
Deirdre

Hi Deirdre,
Thank you very much for your message.
I did a search for Denis Donnelly in Griffith?s Valuation. This is a property valuation survey carried out 1848-64. Although it doesn?t give any genealogical information it can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. There was a Denis Donnelly recorded in Boyle parish in 1858, it is possible that this is either James? father or brother:
It may be an idea to look at church records in the parish to see if you can find any more information on these Donnelly?s. Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Boyle parish, follow this link:
As you can see from the above link Roscommon Heritage and Genealogical Centre have copies available. Here is their email, however please note that a fee may apply:
Have you tried looking in the 1901/1911 census records for any Donnelly?s hat may have been in the area at the time? They are available here:
