My third great grandfather was Timothy Finneran.  He was born in County Roscommon in 1826.  Parents names are possible John and Catherine.  He came over (stowed away) on boat and lived his life out in Vermont.  I cannot find any record of siblings so this is all I have.  I have evidence of County Roscommon but no parish information.  Any information or direction would be appreciated.

Many of the RC churches in Co. Roscommon do not have records back to 1826 so it does not surprise me that I could not find a Timothy Finneran baptismal record on Roots Ireland when I searched from 1821-1831.

I do know that many Irish emigrants from Kilglass parish went to Vermont when they emigrated. There is a book called "Ballykilcline Rising" which is about the migration of people from Kilglass parish. Kilglass RC records start in 1865. (People from other parishes also went to Vermont).

  • Kelly,

I have a Patrick Fineran born 1841 In Kilbegnet, County Roscommon.  I have Patrick's parents as:

John or Timothy Fineran, born Co. Galway

    and

Catherine.  Or possibly Mary Feeny.  born Co. Galway.

Patrick emigrated first to Pennsylvania, then Illinois, then settled in Iowa.   I never heard of a Vermont connection.  Patrick named one of his sons Timothy.

I also have Thomas Fineran born 1840 in Co. Galway, who also settled in Iowa then South Dakota.  I think they were brothers.

I have an photo of an old woman, no date, it says "grandma Fineran, age 102"   It looks part photo and part colored pencil added to it.  Taken in Ireland, as the story goes.  You can see it on The Finneran Clan    Facebook page.

Is your Timothy possibly my Patrick's father?
