I'm looking for the birthplace and parents of my 3rd great grandfather, John Mundy.  He was born in either 1850 (according to his headstone), June 1852 (according to the 1900 census) or 1853 (according to a mining certificate) in Ireland and came to Hazleton, Pennsylvania, USA before 1878.  The 1900 census lists his arrival date as 1873.  I have a copy of his naturalization paper but it only says he's a native of Ireland and was naturalized on 3 October 1884 in Carbon County, Pennsylvania.

He was first married to an Anna McLaughlin in 1878.  Anna died about 1884.  John then married Catherine Boyle in 1886.  Both marriages occured in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.

John died in 1903 and was buried in St. Gabriel's cemetery in Hazleton.

The spelling of John's last name varied depending on who wrote it.  I've found Monday, Munday, Mundy and later his family adopted Mundie as their spelling.

I'm not sure where his family was from.  I posted the same question on the main Ireland forum and someone said there were several John Munday records on rootsireland.ie mostly from the counties Roscommon and Tyrone.

Thank you!

Katie

  • Hi Katie,

Thank you very much for your message. Your search will be much easier if you can narrow it down to a parish/parishes. It may be an idea to contact the Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Centre to see if they can be of any assistance. However, please note that a fee may apply. Here is their email:
