I am tracing the roots of my father's side of the family the Murnane's.  His father John Murnan's parents were Thomas Murnan and Nellie Mahon and his grandmother's name (on his father's side) was Anne I know that she emigrated to the United States in 1855 she had 10 children and 7 were living at the time. Two of her sons Thomas and John were born in Chicago around 1870.  My family and I are traveling to Ireland in June 2013 and would like to trace our roots.

  • Hi Lynn,

You can try posting as much information as you can concerning your relatives. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to assist you.

Do you know much about their emigration? Dates, the reason why they left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. via Liverpool, Ellis Island, New Orleans etc....), this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

Have you tried checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) or Anne or her relatives?. The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

I wish you the best of luck with your search.

    Genealogy support.

Lynn, I cam across this posting doing some random searches for my family tree, and I realize this posting is from several years ago but trying to confirm some Murnan Family geneaology.  My mother is Anita Murnan of Denver, her Father Warren Murnan of Denver, his father Michael Murnan born NY but raised in Chicago.  His parent's were John Murnan and Anne (Mangan?) Murnan also of Chicago with serveal children including John and Edward.  Any chance we are connected?
