Dear All,

Thanks very much - this is my first post.  I have been trying to find my husband's first ancestor from Ireland - Michael Kelly. We know his movements in Australia, but nothing about who he was or shere he came from. He married Catherine Flynn in NSW Australia in 1842.

Throught Ancestry DNA, I may have a link to a Catherine Kelly who married Luke McGauran in Roscommon, in Nov 1853 with her etimated birthdate as 1830. (But that is all on her.) Luke's parents were William McGauran and Eleanor Beirne. Luke (b 1823) and Catherine had 10 children.

So......could she be related to my Michael Kelly and hence be the DNA match?

Any help on more details about her (or Michael Kelly) would be most appreciated!

Thanks Susanne

  • Have you found him on a passenger List?    His Australian Death Certificate should give his parents names and place of birth!!!   His Marriage in NSW to Flynn should hold some more details for you.     What was his occupation over there?    Was his passage over paid for.   Can you give me any details you have on Catherine and Michael and I will search for you.   We have big connections in Australia and know our way around many of the areas of research so may be able to help.   Another fantastic source of help in tracing Aussie relatives is TROVE nla, the online newspaper free site.    Wonderful source of research especially for obituaries and death notices, family announcements etc.

Can you if you don't mind give me your name which you use on Ancestry for your DNA.    Also are you familiar with GEDMATCH?   If so upload your Ancestry DNA there and other matches may come up, from people who are doing their DNA with other companies.

I have many Kellys in my ancestry from the County Roscommon area, so perhaps if you let me have your details I will check.

Also Ancestry DNA now have a new facility called "Genetic Communities" so if you are a high Irish link, the area your ancestors came from may be highlighted which would narrow it down.

All the best and look forward to hearing from you

  • I found the Marriage of McGauran, but it is spelt McGovern.  3rd November 1853,    Luke McGovern married to Catherine Kelly in the Parish of Aughrim, Co Roscommon.   Witness 1 is Bernard McDermott and Witness 2 is Anne Kelly.

Please let me have your DNA details and upload to GEDmatch as suggested by me might prove useful.

    All the best

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on Roots Ireland and did not find any Luke McGauran marriage records which would indicate that maybe the church records for the marriage in 1853 are not available. Was the info on the marriage contained on an Ancestry tree or do you have a church record?

Finding a Michael Kelly in Co. Roscommon will be very difficult without his parents names and if he was born around 1820 very few churches have records. I assume you don't have his parents names.

As an aside I checked the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Roscommon and ther were only two McGauran records-- Michael McGauran in Shankill parish and Owen McGauran in Drumatemple parish.

You may want to upload your raw DNA data to Gedmatch www.gedmatch.com Gedmatch is a volunteer run site where you can uplaod your data and see if you match someone who tested with another company and also uploaded their data to Gedmatch.

Let me know what questions you have.

  • Hi - I am back.  Still no new info in Australia. Have fleshed out my McGauran line - but again no clues for Kelly side. Sadly no great breakthroughs, but we have narrowed it down!

    DNA

David and Ron Durie share a proven paper trail and 48 cm of DNA to ggg grandfather Michael Kelly.

David Kelly, Ron Durie and A.B., managed by Barnes Berhan all share DNA.

    Gedmatch – David = BF2098672/A112017, *AB A728402

A.B. (Barnes Berhan) – tree is directly to McGoverns/McGaurans from Roscommon Ireland.

Gerald McGauran shares DNA with A.B. Barnes Berhan, Josephine Kelly, and David Kelly.

David Kelly matches Josephine Kelly, but no shared matches.

Andrew Cassady – 24cm – Matches Belinda Williams another proven Kelly relative. Thomas Cassady born 1799 Roscommon.

    Trees

    Gerald McGuaran/Sue Larson Kelly tree:

The likely match is the marriage of Luke McGuaran/McGovern (1823-1888) and Catherine Kelly in Aughrim, Roscommon in 1853.  (Witness Anne Kelly).  No Kelly parents.

A.B. Barnes Berhan – tree has McGoverns from Ireland.  The great-grandfather is Luke McGauran m. Catherine Kelly (then Michael, then Michael (USA). No Kelly parents.

    Josephine Kelly tree:

Patrick Kelly (Patt) 1841-1908 born in Roscommon, Ireland, son named Michael. No Kelly parents.

So if the addition of these names helps in any way, I would really appreciate it!
