Looking to find more about my GG Grandfather Martin Concannon who married Eleanor Power (s) from Runnaruag, Elphin, Roscommon. He may be from galway or Roscommon as his 1st son and daughter - John (my G Grandfather) & Mary wer baptized in Ballintober Parish in Roscommon and that is close to the border of Galway.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have hit a dead end in finding out any info on Martin's parents or if he had any siblings.

  • Hi Martin,

Yes I do have some dates although I will list as "abt" if not sure 100%. I think it would be so fabulous if a Martin helps me find more info about my GG Grandfather Martin - thanks!

Martin Concannon - born abt 1817 (some things say 1823) but his grave stone says he died at 67 in 1884 so that would be abt 1817. He came to the USA on 7-29-1863 with his wife Eleanor and son John (my G Grandfather), daughter Mary and twins Margaret & Anthony. It appears tha Margaret died on the voyage over as an infant.

I have found nothing more on Martin and no Marriage Certificate for Martin & Eleanor. But I did find Eleanor Powers baptism 9-26-1839 in Elphin RC Church in Roscommon. Her parents listed as Anthony Power & Ellen McManaway with sponsors: Helen Cotton & Thomas Conry. Eleanor's obituary - her death was 3-9-1917 in NJ and it said she was born educated & married in Roscommon.

I also found my G Grandfather's baptism - John J Concannon - no date of birth isted - but I found it was 4-28-1857 and he was baptised on 5-17-1857 with one sponsor listed: Ellen McNamara.

I also found Mary Concannon's baptism  - also no date of birth given, but baptism date of May 1861 with sponsors: Dennis Power & Elizabeth Power.

No baptism was found for Margaret & Anthony (twins) Concannon but it appears they were born in 1863 - the same year the emigrated to America.

I have checked with Roscommon Heritage Center and found alot of these things, but they could find nothing about Martin which is why I think maybe he was from Galway originally - possibly?

  • Just want to encourage you Cheryl - you have a lot of info there - and I think there is a high chance the origins of Martin Concannon will be found.

And Thanks Martin for helping here!

  • Hi Cheryl

Hope that I can be of help :)

Firstly Eleanor in Runnaruag http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/roscommon/elphin.htm How confident are you that this is your Eleanor ?

If 100% confident then the Valuation office in Dublin has the cancelled books showing who came intopossession of the land after Eleanor Quite possibly when Eleanor left another family member took over the farm http://www.valoff.ie/research.htm

However as Michael your great grandfather John was baptised in Ballintober and that is a distance away it may be a different Eleanor - that's why I ask about how confident you are

On the Concannon side if John was the first born then there is a possibility that Martin's father was also John and the, at this time, traditional naming of first born son after the paternal grandfather was followed

If this was the case there may be a candidate for Martin's father in Ballintober parish itself :

    Listed in the Griffith's are 3 Concannons - http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/roscommon/ballintober.htm

    Concannon John Cloonykerny Ballintober Roscommon

    Concannon Michael Cloonykerny Ballintober Roscommon

    Concannon Patrick Ballyfinegan Ballintober Roscommon

That also is a possibility and there are still Concannons in the 1901 and 1911 census

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Roscommon/Ballintober/Cloonykerny/

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Roscommon/Ballintober/Cloonykerny/

and !! there is a Martin Concannon - maybe named after his uncle in America ??

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Roscommon/Ballintober/Cloonykerny/1663017/

The fact that you cannot find any records for Martin , baptism or marriage is not surprising In my own family I have great aunts and uncles who are not recorded in the local parish This was quite common

Cloonykerny is just north west of Ballintober and Ballyfinegan borders it so possibly as well that Michael, John and Patrick may have some connection

Let me know what you think

  • re: John J Concannon's sponsor Ellen McNamara

There is a neighbour in Cloonykerny of John in the Griffith's called Andrew McNamara

That is again increasing the chances that John is Martin's father

  • Hi Martin,

The Eleanor listed in Runnaruag - I believe is my GGG Grandmother - Eleanor McManaway Power(s) who was married to Anthony Power (s) - my Eleanor (married to Martin) was their daughter.

Thanks for the tip on the land changing names though because both Eleanors (Mom & daughter) ended up here. I can't find the record for Eleanor McManaway Power (s) trip over - but she is buried in the same Concannon Family plot here and I have found her grave.

We were in Ireland in 2007 and I also wondered how they could have connected being somewhat far apart - Elphin to Ballintober - for back then - but there also were a few Concannon's in Elphin - but I never found any connection to my Martin - yet.

I too believed that my Martin's Father's name could have easily been John because of the tradition to name the 1st son after the Father's Father. Then I thought his wife should be Mary - the 1st daughter named after the Father's Mother?

I also like the tip that a neighbor was named McNamara - that sounds promising.

I love all this info and possible help to find my elusive Martin's Family. Thank You!

  • You're welcome

I have asked the parish priest to look into it and also have contacted a relation of the Concannons in Cloonykerny so hopefully they may get back with some info as well

    Hello,

My name is Dianne Schultz and I live in Australia.  My father was George Power, my grandfather was Percy Power who married Sylvia Viola Mills, my great grandfather was John Power who married Fanny Emma Norris, my great great grandfather was James Power who married Ellen (Eleanor) Ferris, and my great great great grandfather was Anthony Power married Eleanor Cotton.

I know the posts above are about 7 years old, but I have not long been subscribed to Irelandxo.com and only just found the discussion thread about the Power family connected to Runnaruag,  I have never been to Ireland, so I rely mostly on research on Ancestry.com and other websites.

My ggg-grandfather Anthony Power was born about 1770 (I estimate) and married an Eleanor Cotton in 1793.  They had a number of children including my GG-grandfather James Power who was born somewhere between 1811 and 1816 and married Ellen Ferris.  I have only found Catholic baptism records (through Roots Ireland) for two of those children connected to Runnaruag in 1809 and 1818, but am struggling to find much information about the other children, and indeed Anthony Power or Eleanor Cotton.  I have seen records connecting an Anthony Power with Eleanor McManaway, but am unsure if there is any connection between the two Anthony Power's - or if they are one and the same person.  I have not found any records to prove any connection.

Is anybody still researching their Power connections in Elphin, Roscommon?

Would certainly appreciate any further assistance.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Jill

I have just sent you another email if you are still prepared to connect with me regarding our Power ancestors.  The first one was back in September, and I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.  I hope you received that first message.

Looking forward to receiving your response.

    Kind regards
