Looking for help with both branches of my Morris family from Roscommon. I have recently found an online record stating my Great Grandmother Margaret Morris to be born in the parish of Caslterea on 19 August 1854. She was one of 6 known children to John Morris/Morriss and Mary Shanon/Shannon.

Martin c.1843, Bridget c.1848, Catherine c.1853, Margaret c.1854, Mary c.1855 & Patrick c.1858.

All of these children migrated to NZ in the 1870/80's. Mary Shanon also migrated to NZ in 1877 with sons Martin & Patrick. Bridget was last to migrate. She was already married to Martin Keegan and they had 6 children with them listed on passenger list, Edward, Mary, John, William, Martin & Margaret.

The assumption being made is that John Morris had died giving Mary Shanon cause to leave to join her daughters who had already left other than Bridget.

Mary Shanon death record states her parents as Thomas Shanon & Bridget Hesten or Hester. Mary's estimated year of birth is 1809.

Any help in identifying John Morris & Mary Shanon's marriage date, names of John Morris's parents and siblings for either and date of death for John Morris would be greatly appreciated. Also any evidence of other children to John & Mary as there seems to be long gaps for first three children, making me think there were others.

Cheers - Sean

Do you have access to the Roots Ireland indexes? I searched from 1839-1859 in Castlerea RC parish for children of John Morris with a wife named Mary and there were 9 records. What we don't know is whether there was another John and Mary Morris in the parish at that time. There were two Martin records One in 1843 which matches the 1843 in your note and another in 1855 so maybe there was a second family.I also found a John in 1849. Like you I could not find a John Morris marriage to a Mary pre 1843. Below is the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilkeevin parish. Quite a few John Morris' Not sure which is yours. I also located two 1874 civil death index records. I assume one of the two is for your ancestor probably the second record. You can get copies of theses records for around 4 euros each from the General Register Office. The death record would show where the deceased lived, cause of death and the name of the informant and possibly the relationship of the informant. I can provide instructions if you want to get records. Let me know if you have questions.

  • Thanks for the quick reply Roger,

Yes I use Roots Ireland quite alot. I have the records of the deaths you mention from Roots Ireland.

    1. John Morris Age 67 Death:10 December 1874. Address: Rosmeen. Parish Castleplunket. Occupation: Herdsman. Informant was Margaret Morris with note Informant relationship not known. Could be my Gt grandmother as she would have been 20 at that time.

    2. John Morris Age 56. Address: Lisboy, Kilkeevan - but listed as a widower so I counted him out.

So of these two number one is the hot favourite. On Margarets marriage cert in NZ she lists her father John as a Farmer.

You mention using the General Register Office. I have looked at that previously but appears you can only backdate to 1924 unless I am looking at wrong site.

    Thanks for the help

  • Sean:

The GRO provides copies of all civil records from 1864 on. Go to this link.

    https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

Print out the death form, fill out the form to the best of your ability, include the info from the index record: year of death, registration district and volume and page number. Make sure you just ask for a copy. You have to mail the request to the GRO address in Co. Roscommon but you can have them e-mail the copy back to you.

  • I have read your details with curiosity. I am a Shannon from within 2.5 miles away from Frenchpark . Almost all the Shannon's from the villages mentioned would have been my family. Our family ( 3 or 4 men. )originally came from Clare , South West of Ireland & were rehoused in Roscommon appx.1650. My family still live in this region after all those years. I am visiting my family within the next 3 months & will certainly do research on my great grandfather's family.
Hope this is of some interest to you.

  • So sorry I am not on Facebook., however do you mind sending me your email.

My Shannon connection in Australia emailed me yesterday about a Morris connection with one of his Shannon family. He is making contact now with the family who are living in NZ. So that could be an interesting development.

He knows a lot about Shannon Families ,. Appx. 6 years ago a group of 8 people from Australia visited Ireland , solely to find their Shannon ancestors.

Sean Thank You for your correspondence.
    Bye for now.
