Using the Griffith's valuation in 1856 I  traced a Peter Curley to the parish of Roscommom, diocese of Elphin. Can anyone provide the name and address of the church or churches I would contact to research Peter's birth, marriage and birth of his son William about 1842?

Here is a link to the names and addresses of parishes in the Diocese of Elphin. Roscommon is towards the bottom of the list. http://www.elphindiocese.ie/diocese/parishes

I just checked the Roots Ireland indexes and could not locate a William Curley baptism father Peter in Co. Roscommon from 1837-1847. That does not mean that the record is not available elsewhere.

Another option is to wait until next summer and you can search the parish registers for free. See this Press Release from yesterday.

  • Roger, thanks for the reply. I love this site and the willingness of people to help. I will check out the diocese site and the site on free records. Can I substitute another diocess name for elphin and use the same format to get parishes in that diocese? Are you in Castlemore? My wife's Maternal side (Duffy) is from Ballaghaderreen. Still have cousins there.

Each diocese has their own format. here is the link to the Diocese of Achonry which includes Ballaghaderreen. http://achonrydiocese.org/parishes/

I live in the States (Maryland). I'm the parish liaison for Castlemore and Kilcolman parishes which includes Ballaghaderreen although I respond to queries for all of Ireland.

My grandmother, Nora Roddy, emigrated from Knockanaconny townland ( a mile from the town on the Charlestown road) in 1906 and went to Philadelphia. Her mother was Mary Duffy who came from Magheraboy townland in Kilmovee parish in Mayo about 5 miles southwest of Ballaghaderreen.

My wife and I were in Ireland the last two weeks of September and visited Ballaghaderreen although we don't have any relatives there now.

  • Roger, don't know if you are still doing replies on Roscommon, but if you are here is my situation. I have used the Irish Times /Griffiths valuation to stratify where the Curleys resided and have been going through the on line parish records for the parishes in Roscommon and Galway where the Curley name predominates. I have found parishes with Curleys but not my great-great father Peter born about 1820's or his son William born about 1842. The records either don't cover these times, are so hard to read or don't have these names. I am coming to Ireland in May to visit my wife's relatives in Galway and Roscommon. Any ideas on what I can do while there to improve my search? Peter

    Welcome back!

Yes. I'm still volunteering for Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on Roots Ireland from 1832-1852 in both Roscommon and Galway for William with father Peter and got no record.

Roots does have Peter Curley records in Roscommon for 1814, 1821, 1822 and 1825 (2). However, without knowing his parents names you have no way to determine if any of these records are for your ancestor.. I didn't check the parishes but most likely they would be from Boyle, Athlone, Athleague, Elphin, Aughrim, Creagh or Killucan. These are the only parishes that go back into the early 19th century or in some case late 18th century.

  • Roger, I have spent the last day going through the parish records of Kiltivan, Roscommon. Peter Curley leased land there in 1857. I have found a Peter as whitness to weddings and births of other Curleys and the birth of one child  to him and Catharina Quin in 1841. I have not found his marriage or the birth of my Great grand Father William. My questions are two: was it the trend in the 1800" for the couple to married in the town of the bride and , if so, is there a way of determining what parishes covered the town of Roscomm in 1840's? Kilteen/Kitivan did not have their wedding or any other children and I want to see if there are other parishes close that I could check.Oh!, since I will be going to Roscommon in May is there a historical society  or reseacher there I could contact?

In the mean time I am checking four parishes in Galway.

  • Pete:

Generally, the marriage took place in the bride's parish.

Here is the link to Church of the Sacred Heart which includes St. Josephs in Kilteevan You may want to ask them but I think all available records are on the parish register that was digitized.

I live in the USA so I suggest that you contact the main library about a researcher.

  • Roger thanks for the info. I will contact them before I go over to Ireland in May. I will see if they have records and a cemetry with records. Thanks for all your help. I am also looking at Castlerea as I found a Peter Curly getting married there in June 1840 and then him and his wife having a child there in 1841. Pete
