My greatgrandmother Winifred Conboy was, I believe, born in 1833. Her parents were Thomas and Honor, nee Hannaley. Thomas may have worked or owned a quarry. Winifred married Richard Fairbrother, a soldier in the 49th British regiment in 1849 at Castlerea. They emigrated from London to Wellington, New Zealand, on the Ann Wilson in1856. Winifred died in 1915 at Carte6rton, New Zealand.

I looked at the Tithe Applotment listings www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie  and there were 17 Conboy entries including two Thomas records in Tisrara civil parish (see below). One was in Lismagh (or Lismaha) townland and the other in Kilnagralty townland. RC church records for Tisrara/Ballyforan/Dysert do not begin until 1850 which may explain why I did not find a record for Winifred on Roots Ireland.

I checked the 1855-1856 Griffiths for Co. Roscommon and there were no Conboys in Tisrara parish.

I would use the Tithe data as a lead.

  • I have just begun a response to you Roger, thanking you for the help. It may have gone before I could finish. Your information is a bit baffling but interesting and I shall follow it up energetically as soon as I can make some time. I'll keep in touch to feed back my progress.

Roger, Just to show I am still working on this but not very actively for want of time. I have also picked up some suggestions from 14th August. I shall report on any results. Thank you again, Lesley.
