I am searching for records -birth and marriage- on my great great grandfather Peter Curley. I have researched the Griffiths Valuation and found a Peter Curley living in Cloonybeirne, Drum and Killinvoy in the 1856-57 time period. Peter , I believe was born about 1810-20 and had a son William born about 1840-42. William, my great grandfather married a Mary Collins in St. Helens Lancaster England in 1865. William and Mary had a daughter Ellen and a son Thomas in St. Helens and then immigrated to the US- New York city - where my grandfather Peter Curley was born about 1870. Do I need to contact the parish priest in each of these places and if so can anyone provide names and addresses? Any other ideas on where to go to get the records would be appreciated.

I responded to a post you made last December. See link below.

    A couple of comments:

Cloonybeirne is a townland not a parish. Drum and Killinvoy are civil parishes but in many cases in Co. Roscommon the RC parish name is different than the civil parish name.

I checked the Roots Ireland indexes for baptismal records for Peter Curley from 1810-1820 and there was only one record in the Athleague RC church. Without you knowing his parents names, there is no way to verify if this is the correct record for your ancestor. ( The parents for this record were John and Catherine).

Many RC churches did not have records prior to 1820 so if your Peter was baptized in one of those churches, his record will not be available.

Same issue with potential marriage records. In fact there are no Peter Curley marriage records on Roots in Roscommon in the 1830s.

  • Roger, did not recall the previous reply. Thanks again. Couple of questions- does the Roots site index the records of all RC churches in the counties or just some? Do you think this site might have info on William  Curley since his birth is in the 1840's and I know one of his parents. Peter

  • Peter:

Roots Ireland has records for many of the churches in Ireland but not all. For example, the records for Co. Kerry churches and a good part of Co. Cork are on another site that is free. The Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly in Tipperary is not available on Roots. There are other examples in other counties.

I checked Roots previously for William from 1837-1847. See this excerpt from my response to your December message.

I just checked the Roots Ireland indexes and could not locate a William Curley baptism father Peter in Co. Roscommon from 1837-1847. That does not mean that the record is not available elsewhere.

Just to clarify Roots Ireland has transcribed the church records available to them and what they have are the transcriptions and not the actual registers. The legibility of 19th century priest's handwriting was not at a high standard and mistakes were made in transcribing the written names. A name like Curley could have looked like Conroy or Conry etc. That is why the NLI project to put the actual parish registers online is so important.

  • Roger, I have spent time going through both the Grifiths Valuation and the parish records. I found a Peter Curley renting land around the town of Roscommon. I did not find a marriage record for him there and no birth record for William my Great Grand father. so I started checking diocese that border Roscommon. I found Peter Curley marriage in Castlerea 18 June 1840 to Marian Cahill. To confuse things I find the same record, same spouse, same whitnesses on 18 April 1841.  Questions -why two entries? Why a year apart? Any Idea. I think Castlerea maybe the home diocese of the wife.

Next puzzle- I find a Joannain(?] born to Peter Curly and Catharina Quin 24 Mar 1841 in Roscommon.  But no marriage here.

Still searching. What is the name and address of the Catholic Church in Roscommon as I will try to visit there in May. Also is there a town historian I can contact?
