I am conducting some research on my ancestors Thomas Hawkins and his wife Mary Jane Hawkins - possibly maiden name was Gillis.  The 1901 census tells me that Thomas was a 29 year old General Labourer and that he was married to Mary Jane Hawkins who was 22 years old at the time.  They religious affiliation is listed as Presbyterian and I believe they were probably married sometime between 1899-1901.  I found an index on ancestry.com for a Thomas Hawkins in Belfast in 1899 (registered sometime between July - Sept of that year).  I noticed that the index says a Mary Jane Gillis is also listed on that same page, so I think it is the same couple, but haven't seen the original so I'm not sure.

Basically I'd like to find Thomas and Mary Jane's marriage record, confirm their dates/places of birth as well as who their parents were.  The census says that Thomas was from county Antrim and that Mary Jane was from county Cavan.

The census also states the following for Thomas and Mary Jane in 1911: County Antrim, Poor Law Union: Belfast, City of Belfast, Parish: Shankill and they apparently lived on Glasgow Street.

Any information or pointers would be greatly appreciate.

    Below is the index record you saw on Ancestry. You can write to the General Register Office and get a copy of this record for around 4 euros. The marriage record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom lived in 1899. I also looked for a birth index record for Thomas and found an 1870 index record in Co. Antrim. I looked for a record for Mary Jane Gillis in Co. Cavan and the only one available was an 1885 birth which is too late for somone who was 22 in 1901. Below the two index records are instructions for ordering records from the GRO.

    Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.
