I am researching my maternal line -Corbetts from, Taughmaconnel, Roscommon. My grandfather - Thomas was born in Castlesampson, 28 Jan 1882. His parents were James Corbett and Mary Fahy (or Fahey - father was Thaddeus Fahy). My grandfather immigrated to the US (Boston) in 1908. His siblings Annie (b. 1868), Eliza (b. 1872), Catherine (b. 1874) Mary (b. 1877), Bridget (b. 1880) and Timothy (b. 1881) - all immigrated to Boston. One brother, Patrick (b. 1870) remained in Ireland - I suspect being the oldest male he inherited the farm/land. Patrick married Mary Logue. Several of their children (James, Patrick, Bridget) immigrated to Boston, and I believe Thomas, Mary and Timothy remained.

I’d would like to find out any information that anyone may know about this family, also I am looking to locate any CORBETT descendants ( or Fahy or Logue), that might remain in the area or are known to anyone. I think that one of Patrick's boys, (*), may have operated or owned the Hayden Hotel and Brennan's Pub in Ballinsloe, probably until the 1970s -1980s.

Possibly the parents were deceased by 1901. Below is the link to the 1901 census with Patrick as the head of household and showing Thomas as 16. Also included is the 1911 census for Patrick and his family.

Mother Mary died in 1888. There is a civil death index record for a James Corbett in 1884.

  • Roger,

Thank you so much for the info you provided. The birth and death information for the parents is very helpful. Never guessed that they would both have passed away by the time of the censuses.

I had seen the 1901 and 1911 censuses previuosly but they are a bit confusing with those identified as the brother and sisters of Patrick as well as trying to compare the ages. Thomas seems to be a fit, but the two "sisters" do not have the names of any of the sisters I know of, although I suppose that Bessy could be short for Elizabeth although the dobs are off. Also there is no Margaret that I know of,  I'll have to look into these a little more in depth and do some additional birth/searching. It's possible that Margaret passed away quite young. The only sister I know to be about her age was Bridget.

QUESTION:  Would you happen to konw what RC Church the familes might have belonged to so I can search for Baptism and Marriages, etc., when I go to Ireland (hopefully next year).

Further, any idea what the cemetery might be where they are buried? I found a cemetery several years ago when I was visting Ireland and just happended upon Castlesampson. Found some Corbetts, but not my great-grandparents. \

    Thanks,

Their church was likely St. Ronans. http://www.clonfertdiocese.ie/html/taughmaconnell.asp I assume your family is buried there.

The 1901 census ages appears to be understated  for Thomas and likely for Margaret also. She was likely 16 since I found an 1884 civil birth index record for a Margaret Corbett and the father likely died that year. You will note that the census form showed she was "dumb" Possibly she had Downs syndrome and maybe her health was not good. In fact, I located a civil death index record for a Margaret Corbett who died in 1904 at age 20. That must be her.

You can search Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie for church records probably starting in 1842 for Taughmaconnell. Roots is a pay site to view a transcription of a church record. If you want a civil record 1864 or later, let me know and I can look up the index record and you can then writer to the General Register office for a copy.

Thanks for your information and advice. Sorry I did not respond earlier but I'vee been away from the genealogy work for a bit.

I'll follow up on your advice and see what I find.
