Thank you for your previous advice and assistance. I am gradually gathering more information about the Keoghs, and have now found on FHL microfilm 989750 the January 1832 marriage of my 3rd great grandparents, Denis Keogh and Catharine Sharkey, at St. Peter's, Athlone, and the 24 April 1835 baptism of their son, John Peter KEOGH, also at St. Peter's.

The 1987 booklet "Athlone Abbey Graveyard Inscriptions" by Hazel A. Ryan on page 44 contains the gravestone inscription for Catherine (Sharkey) Keogh and her son, John Peter Keogh, and notes that the stone location is  Area Map "F"

The map on page 4 of the book shows "F" as indicating the Wall of Abbey, although it seems from reading the book that all but one or two stones have been placed along the walls.

May I ask if someone would be willing to take and send me photos of the overall area where the stone is placed, and of the headstone of my 3rd great grandmother?

  • Afternoon

    I stopped by the graveyard in Athlone yesterday and located the headstone. I will send you the photos I took there. Unfortunately while the stone itself is in good condition it is quite difficult to read some of the information. Anything I couldn?t read (or feel with my finders) I have put in square brackets. There was a small wild rose growing nearby and I pick one and put in on the headstone on your behalf. From what I could read it goes as follows:

     

    Sacred

    To the Memory of

    Mrs Catherine Keogh alias

    Sharkey who dep this life

    N the 2nd July 18[??] aged [??]

    Also that of her son John Peter Keogh, who died

    12th December 18[??] in the

    [?] year of his age

    Requiescat in pace

    Erected by Denis Keogh

    As a tribute of esteem

    [?] [?]

    Beloved Child

  • Thank you for taking the time to go out of your way to take the photos of the Abbey graveyard and of the Keogh memorial, and to puzzle out the inscription. This helps me "connect" with my third great grandmother, and with the parish and townland.
