  • Hi there,

The Roman Catholic diocese of Tibohine (Elphin) records do not start until 1833. This is a little late for you.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You could also try checking the 1796 Spinning Wheel Premium Lists. There are 1,650 names for Co. Roscommon. You can find this list here: www.failteromhat.com This website has lots of other useful lists you could look at.

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com

There is another document you could investigate dated 1838-48 called the Reproductive Loan Fund records. This includes the parish of Elphin and Tibohine and has a total of over 9,000 names. You can find this at the UK National Archives in Kew, T 91. This is the link: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

Hello, thank you for your response.Iam very frustrated about not finding where in Ireland my great great grandfather Robert Dillon came from. I hired a geneologist who is based in Ireland, and he exhausted all search means and could not find him. I know he was born in County Roscommon but do not know how long he stayed there. He was born between 1820-1822,his wife was Rose Early. They left Ireland in about 1841-1842. We did a surname search and figured he was from western roscommon or the counties that boarder County Mayo.I do not know what else can be done. No church records were helpful

    Regards

    Rob Dillon
