Looking for the townland of Michael Duffy who married Catherine Oates in 1838. I beleive they are my 3x grandparents and parents of my 2x grandfather Patrick who was born in 1841.

Assuming your Michael was still alive in 1855 and was listed in the Griffiths Valuation survey, he would be one of the six below. The Mormon Church microfilmed RC church records for the parish of Lisacull and Loughglynn back to 1817. You may want to order this film online and have it sent to a local Family History Center. www.familysearch.org  where you can review the film. https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/26247?availability=Family%20History%20Library possibly you can locate where your Duffys lived. I've also included a map of Tibohine with the townlands.

  • Thanks! I have seen this information before. Tere were actually 2 Michael's in Moyne.

I have found much information on my 2x grandfather, Patrick Duffy using a variety of sources. On my ancestry page you will see he was born in 1841 and emigrated to the US 1862, He came back and married Anne Pearson (Puston, Preston?) in England 1864 and returned tot he US in 1866. Anne joined him in the US in 1869 with their first born, Elizabeth. They settled in Scranton PA where they had my great grandfather in, William Duffy.

I have also used familytreedna to locate a distant cousin in Ballymote whom I visited in July. He directed me to the National Library in Dublin when're I found the ledger of Patrick's birth and his parents (I believe) Michael and Catherine Oates. I also found this record on rootsireland.ie.

I'm interested in confirming his parents, going back as far as I can and finding town lands where they lived so I can visit next summer. Town lands were never listed in any documentation.

A recent discovery which is probably a mistake I found on rootsireland.ie is since what I assume are Patricks parents and were married in 1938 and Patrick was born in 1841, they probably had a child (or two) before him. I didn’t find anything in the files in Dublin but I might have missed it. Working on the assumption that since many Irish families named their first born after the father. I did a search and found a Michael born Feb 1839 which is 18 months after they were married-which is a long time unless they had another child before him, a girl.

BUT….the baptism Record I found listed Brigid Mahon as the mother!  Brigid Mahon is listed as a witness to Patrick’s 1841 birth to Michael and Catherine Oates. Strange! Clerical error? Different people with the same names in the same parish at the same time? First night?  Hanky panky?

If you have not already, you may want to look at the Tithe Applotment listing for Tibohine parish which are from 1825. There are 23 Duffys listed (although some could be dups) including a number in Moyne.

I just had my DNA tested through Familytree DNA. I got my first 12 markers back and I'm waiting for additional data.

One of my great-grandmothers was a Duffy from Magheraboy, Kilmovee Co. Mayo probably eight miles to the west of Tibohine.

  • Thanks, The person I visited in Ireland who was a distant match on familytreedna.com is Owen (Eoin) Duffy in Ballymote, Sligo. He has done an incedible amount of geneological work for various Duffys and has written volumes of information for people. He told me that all of the Duffys in Sligo and Roscommon origniated from Kilmovee Co. Mayo. He said was going to knock on a few dorrs for me in the Tibohine area but I haven't heard back from him. We're thinking my family were from either Moyne or Carton More. I'm afraid so many families during that time emigrated to escape the famine and since Patrick married a British woman, before moving to the US, they might have all moved to England.

I'd like to get in touch with Owen. I have a brick wall with my Kilmovee Duffys. If you hear back from him, could you pass him my e-mail address. mcdonn@comcast.net   Thanks!
