Hello everybody,

I'm new to this site so please bare with me.

Yesterday, after nearly 12 years of searching I found where my Gt Gt Grandfather was baptised!!

24th September 1859 - Ballindoo - Jas(James) Kennedy. Father: Pt (Patrick) Kennedy. Mother: Mary Kelegher (Gallagher)

The only record I have of Patrick and Mary is word of mouth through the family. Although I think my Mother has some record.

On the Griffiths Valuation there is only 1 family named Kennedy living in the area Balindoo/ Doocastle, with the head being named John Kennedy. Could this be Patricks father or his brother? Patrick, James, John & Martin are still in my family today.

I know they all moved on ending up in Achill, Co. Mayo.

I would like to know what to do next and where to look please.

Thank you

Helen.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I looked at the baptismal record on the Kilshavy RC parish register and the maiden name for Mary was Keenan. Also, the record indicated that the family lived in Bunnanadden which is in Cloonoghil civil parish. Cloonoghil and Kilshalvy parishes as well as Kilturra civil parish are all in the south Sligo area close to the place where Mayo/Sligo/Roscommon intersect. Below are links to the 1858 Griffiths for the three Sligo parishes. You will note that Kilshalvy has 5-6 Keenan records. There is a Thomas Kennedy in Cloonoghil parish. I did not see the John Kennedy record you mentioned.

I checked Roots Ireland and did not find any baptismal records for siblings to James.

Let me know how we can further assist your efforts.

    Hi Roger,

Thank you for any help you can give.

The name " Keenan" you have for Mary is what I thought it was for months. I spent the day looking yesterday and it seems to be the last one on the register page on the left hand side. Could you have a look and let me know? This seems to be true as far as my Gt Grandmother said. She also was Mary Gallagher D: 1977 in Hamilton Scotland.

    Thank you once again,

    Helen.

The record I was looking at was on the next page-- December 3rd, 1859 and it clearly shows Keenan. Below is a link to the record.

I agree that the September record shows James Kennedy--father Patrick but the mother is clearly Kelegher not Gallagher.. Strange that there were two James Kennedys born within 3 months with the same name for a father and a mother Mary.

  • Hi, Just joined this site. Think we have a connection with the Kennedy name in Doocastle, as I have a Catherine Kennedy c.1862-1940 whose parents were Patrick Kennedy and Mary Killogher (forget about the different spelling, that's her I'm sure, education was almost non existent then). She married my Gt.Uncle John Curley 1862-1909 and had about 7 children together in Doocastle. They are in the 1901 census in Doocastle, if you care to look it up. They moved to Paisley, Scotland after 1901 with all of their children, John died in Paisley in 1909 and Catherine also in 1940. She and the kids are in the 1911 Scotland Census though, minus John of course. The reason that I know that this is factual, I was looking at the Paisley Poor Law Records recently and her name was in there after her husband died. So the Scots person taking her particulars may have struggled with her Irish accent with Kellogher or Killogher, her name is even down as Kinneday in one of the records. So I think their mothers name, as another poster said is not Gallagher.

    Hope this helps., Ray
