Hello one and all,

I am looking for any Maye and McGinty relatives who would have lived in the Banada area from at least 1855 (probably earlier) to 1861 when they moved to Dewsbury, West Riding, Yorkshire, England and eventually Youngstown, Ohio, USA in 1880. I know that Bernard(us)/Bryan Maye married a Bridget Ginty in Kilmacteige on February 11, 1855. They then had three, probably four, children born in Banada: James Stephen (January 6, 1857, baptised January 12, 1857), John J May (November 7, 1857; baptised November 10, 1857), Bernard May should be born/baptised between 1858 and 1860 but I could not find him in the church books, and finally, Michael May (baptised July 21, 1861). Between 1861 and 1864, the young family moved to Dewsbury, West Riding Yorkshire, England and had 7 or 8 more kids including Thomas May who was born in Dewsbury in the first quarter of 1864.

Other useful info is that they lived under the landlordship of Reverend Daniel Jones in Banada in 1858 per Griffith's Valuation. Also, they appear in an 1871 UK Census record where Bryan May is a glassmaker and he and Bridget have 7 children.

I would like to find any info about Bernard and Bridget's parents and lives before marriage, if it's out there.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You may want to look at the 1825 Tithe Applotment listings for Kilmacteige parish. Over 20 May entries although there may be some duplicates. None show Banada as the townland.

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

Kilmacteige RC records start in 1845 so if Bernard and Bridget were baptized in that parish, records will not be available.

The National Library of Ireland http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0136  just released the RC parish registers online and I gave you the link to Kilmactigue. You may want to take another look for young Bernard.

  • Hi
I live in Banada and remember a John Maye who died in the 1970s and lived in part of Banada that was known as Idreal - the house is still there but now is surrounded by a wood. I suspect your ancestors came from another area in Banada (not that it is a large area) which is presently owned by Clarkes/Heneghans as the lands were subsequently divided. Hope this will benefit you. Regards Daniel Jones

  • Hi Daniel and Roger,

thank you both for your input. It is very helpful! I found many new points to look into here. Daniel, your post especially helps me flesh some things out as there were several Heneghan households in the Griffith Valution record with Bryan May in 1858 Banada. Although, I should make a note that they were spelled "Henehan" mostly. My main problem is that I am a very soon to be graduate student in the US and thus cannot afford to go around and pay for every document that I can get my hands on. But if either of you could help me further, I would just like to know if there is a way to determine if Bryan/Bernard Maye had any siblings and if I can find any of their descendants to ask about their lives.

Regardless, thank you both for your help!

Have a great start to the new year,
