I am trying to locate Cornelius Bohan's birth register. He immigrated to Australia in 1857 (aged 17) and the ship records stated he was from Kilmoyler and his parents were Edmund Bowen & Norah Irwin (both deceased). Cornelius death certificated stated his mother was Norah Fogarty. So he would have been born around 1840. I have searched the NLI Catholic Registers and also I have commissioned a search through The Tipperary Historical Society of all 46 parishes within Cashel & Emly with no success. He immigrated to Australia with a Michael Bohan (possibly cousin) who's parents were William Bohan & Ellen . Do you have any suggestions where else I could look? Maybe Cornelius had siblings that stayed in Ireland? Look forward to any info.

regards

Margaret (great, great granddaughter of Cornelius)

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Find My Past and Ancestry as of yesterday now have all RC records that are available. I did a search on Find My Past for Cornelius Bohan with variants including Bowen and did not find the record. It would appear that his baptismal record is not available on any source.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • Hi Margaret

Re Australia Records - you do not say where he landed? There is a possibility that he is in the Immigration Deposit Journals - in NSW they started in 1853. I have found relatives in there who were sponsored from Ireland.

Find My Past currently has free access to Irish Records - including the NLI BDMs searchable by Parish.

You have a few more days to access this and it is well worthwhile - http://search.findmypast.ie/search-ireland-records?utm_source=fmp&utm_m…

If this link doesn't get you there let me know and I can send you the promotional flyer with link.
