I would be most greatful for any information about John Mitchell(1831-1898) and Catherine Power Mitchell (1840-1918).  I believe that they lived at Moat Villa.  Their daughter Mary Agnes was my great grandmother.  Mary Agnes emigrated to the US in 1886.  Her brother, James Mitchell remained in the area and died in 1922.  I believe that their neighbors were the O'Donohue's and the Misses Ann and Mary Pelly.

  • Dear Marilyn

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out

A local volunteer spend a good deal of time on your query over the weekend without success, I'm afraid. He did suggest though that a subscription to Find My Past might be a good idea in case there is anything further to learn from the lesser known sources.

    Best wishes

  • Do you have estimated years of birth for your James and Mary ?

There's a possible lead with a birth for a James Mitchell in civil birth records with the parents names you mentioned on the 6th June 1871, but place of birth is Ballylinan/Ballylynan town or townland which is in Killabban civil parish in Co. Laois (formerly Queens County) - see here (IrishGenealogy.ie). Father's occupation is labourer.

  • Hi Marilyn

A collegue from from my own area of Kilbarron Terryglass went searching last few days and came up with the following

    Will copy and paste her results and will add relevent census findings;

"A Catherine Mitchel and son Peter living in Ballycormuck Aglishcloghne Borrisokane in 1901and Catherine was born in Queens County/Laois.

Peter was born in Moatville Borrisokane

     Pelly living in Ballycormack too.

1911 Katherine and James in Ballycormick

Rest of family born in Laois

Mary Agnus born 1869 in Laois (source Roots Ireland)

John died 23 Aug 1898 but it's recorded as Ballycormack Terryglass but Ballycormick/ Ballycormac is in Borrisokane parish?

    Moatville must be around Ballycormac?

    Will make enquiry."

  • Thank you all for your help and interest.  I have been able to ascertain that John and Catherine (Powers) Mitchell lived in County Laois and the first of their seven children were born in the parish of Arles in Laois.  Peter (1876-1959) the youngest was born in Borrisokane, Tipperary.  I have wondered what prompted their move to Tipperary.  I have a copy of a letter sent in 1961 to Patrick Mitchell (1873-1961) from his nephew, Edward Mitchell, son of Edward Paul Mitchell (1869-1958).  In the letter he describes his visit to Ireland and to Moat Ville in Cloneska townland, the childhood home of his father.  He found it to be exactly as his father had described.  The Mitchell's lived at Moat Ville from about 1875-1890.  I do not know if the Mitchells owned this house or if they were tenants on an estate that owned the house.  Can anyone help me with this?  Also, I do not know the occupation of John Mitchell.  The records state that he was a laborer but could it have been farming or some other industry?   Thank you for the links to the 1901 & 1911 census records.  I was also able to find the death records of John and Catherine.   Of the seven children Martin (1891-1943), Edward Paul (1869-1958), Patrick (1873-1961), and my great grandmother Mary Agnes (1870-1955)  all emigrated to the US.  Ellen (1860-1880) and James (1871-1922) died in Borrisokane and Peter (1876-1959) died in Cork.  I know nothing about John (1867-??).  As I said I will be visiting in Borrisokane, probably on January 20th and I hope to be able to see the home at Moat Ville and also visit the church and grave yard.  I can't tell you how much I have appreciated all the help that everyone has offered.  I never dreamed that people would be so generous with their time and information.  If I can be of any assistance in a similar fashion to anyone trying to locate their family members that might have emigrated to the US please let me know.

  • Hi Marilyn

Good to hear from you again Griffiths Valuation is a useful site to find out who owned or rented property but as yo say they arrived in the area around 1875 and Griffiths Valuation was generally surveyed from mid 1840s to mid 1860s but might be useful to search the area in Laois they formally lived in

    This is the link:

We will try to do some more research in the meantime and  perhaps we can arrange to meet when you arrive in the area
