My great, great grandparents, Simon and (Do not know her name) Hogan were from Tipperary but I believe they were from Northern Tipperary near Balleyspellane. Their son Peter Hogan was born around 1825 and died in the USA (Minnesota) in 1871 after first living in Ohio and Illinois. He may have had a brother (or cousin?)  Christopher as he is listed in one of the documents from the US that I have. Peter was married to Julia Farrell, also from Ireland. She was the daughter of Richard Farrell and Mary Delaney. I was told by my father that their parish was Eglish, though I am unsure if this was the civil or Catholic parish as they were also Catholic. I know that Eglish is located in Offlay. I am not sure if Peter and Julia were married in Ireland or the USA  but would like to find some documentation of their marriage. I am also interested in knowing more about their parents (births, marriages, deaths, locations, etc.). I have found some information online from the Parish of Uskane entitled Primary valuation of Tenements listinh a Richard Farrell. I am not sure of the date of its publication. There is also of dated 1851 from Uskane listing a Simon Hogan as a tenent.. I am not sure how to interpret these forms but I do believe it says the town is Balleyspellane North. Perhaps the Farrells were neighbors and that is how Julia and Peter became acquainted? Hopefully these are the right people that I have found. I have information on Peter and his descendants in the USA but am stuck on the Ireland connection. Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated. I have also posted on the Parish of Eglish in Offlay.  Thank you, Mary    PS, I am not sure how to sign out of this site. Also, last time I signed into this website my email and password were rejected and I had to reset. Have you been having difficulty with this?

  • Mary,

Eglish is part of Borrisokane parish in co. Tipperary. Ballyspillane is also in Borrisokane. There was a Cornelius Hogan in Ballyspellane . He married in 1857 & had 7 sons & 3 daughters.

  • Hi Mary.

My husband's GGGgrandfather was Simon Hogan, and his wife's name was Mary (known as May) Ryan

Simon's son, Peter Hogan, is somebody I've been researching for a few years.  Another descendent sent me a copy of         Peter's journal (a genealogist's dream!) which was later used by Peter's son, Simon (named for his paternal grandfather) . Peter was born in August, 1828, and was baptised at the Borrisokane & Ushkean United Catholic Church on 15 August 1928.  The records are online.  Let me know if you have any difficulty and I'll just email you copies.

The people you found on the Valuation records are correct.  These records, which are somewhat confusing are tax records, making sure that the government got their fare portion of any income that was earned and/or money which changed hands

At some point circa 1856, Peter married Julia (nee Judy) Farrell, whom it is believed  had traveled to America on the same boat as Peter. She was born Judy Farrell, but somehow, perhaps upon departure from the ship, her name became Julia rather than Judy, and at some point she met and married Peter. But to date, records have not been found documenting this event. (But I'm persistant and will keep looking.)

The first that we really see documentary evidence about Julia is when she gives birth to their first child, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Hogan in 1857, in New Lexington, Ohio

There are other descendent here in the US (Minnesota) with whom I correspond.  Here is my email:  suewelsh@earthlink.net.  Feel free to join in.  We share information and brainstorm together.

    Best wishes
