My gg-grandfather, John Kelly, purchased 200 acres of land in Nepean, Ontario, Canada in 1848. His place of birth was only listed as Ireland, however, the settlers in that area seem to have originated in Tipperary and some (including my g-grandmother) came from Borrisokane.

I found a military record for a John Kelly dob 1795, Borrisokane, in the Canada, British Regiment, 3rd Foot Soldiers Depot. His Military Date is 01 Jan 1812. I think this may be the man I'm seeking. Is there any way to determine his parents' names or other specific identifying information from this?

There are so many John Kellys from various parishes in Tipperary, that unless I can determine his parents names, it is unlikely I can trace this line any further.

Thank you for any help or direction you can give.

  • Hi Frances

There is a baptism record of John Kelly in Tipperary 1795 on www.rootsireland.ie/ (a subscription site)

    http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=0&prevStartQuery=0

It is from Nenagh R C parish not Borisokane but the two are only 16 KM apart.

There are other John Kelly baptism records for 1794 & 1796 in Tipperary but none is from Borisokane.

Was he married in Ireland? If so what is your ggmother's name?

  • Hi Col,

Thank you for your research. I just subscribed to Roots Ireland, but had not found that record for Nenagh. I'll look at it today.

The John Kelly in the military record was shown as coming from Borrisokane (the reason I picked him from the other dozens of John Kellys). There is no other evidence he was the right one.

John Kelly was married in Ireland. His wife was Bridget Heenan (ca 1797) and they emigrated with two children, Roderick (ca 1830) and Catherine (ca 1832). I've found no definitive Irish records on any of them.

Since John and Bridget were nearly 50 years of age when they went to Canada, I've speculated there may have been adult children, either remaining in Ireland or emigrating separately. If so, I've found nothing to prove or disprove it.

Just yesterday, I found a birth record for a John Kelly in Lorrha in 1831, with parents John Kelly and Bridget HAIN. I have long wondered if Roderick's name might have been John Roderick. If so, perhaps Hain could be an alternative spelling of Bridget's name? Or maybe I'm grasping at straws!

At this point, the only concrete connection I have to Borrisokane is my g-grandmother, Roderick's wife, Catherine Luther. I have her baptism record (and am now working on the Luther line in Clonmel). However, she and Roderick would have been married in Canada. Once again, there seems to be no marriage on record.

Thanks again, Col. One day these Kellys will sort themselves out - I hope!
