I have reached a "brick wall" looking for my ancestors in the Borrisokane (and possibly Thurles) area of Tipperary.  Here is a summary of what I have found:

My gr.gr. grandparents:

William Ryan - b. 1818  (appr.)

Catharine "Kitty" Mara/Meara - b. 1818 (appr.)

they were married in Borrisokane 2/26/1843 ---- witnesses were William Hogan and Judy Young (information from RootsIreland)

Their children (information all from RootsIreland)

John --- b. 11/30/1843 --- born and baptized in Borrisokane; sponsors were Dan Ryan and Mary Mara

Roderick --- baptized in Borrisokane on 5/24/1845; sponsors were MI Ryan and ? Cleary

Mary --- baptized in Borrisokane on 2/10/1847; sponsors were Pat Cleary and Mary Costelloe

Catherine --- baptized in Borrisokane on 7/21/1849; sponsors were Pat Ryan and Peggy Mara

Other Information:

They emigrated to the United States appr 1850.  It appears that children Mary and Catherine died sometime before 1851.  4 more children were born to Kitty and William ---  Mary (1851), Michael (1853), Julia (1856) and Daniel T. (1858).  The 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses indicate that they were all born in Ohio --- several sources indicate that they may have lived in Yellow Springs and Greenville (Darke county). In the 1860, 1870, and 1880 US censuses the family lived in Illinois.

Note:  Son Michael’s death certificate (in the 1920’s) lists William’s and Kitty’s birthplace as “Thurles”.

Thanks!

Barbara

  • Hi Barbara,

Can you please give me the information under "address" and "parish/district" on your roots Ireland certificates.

Where you have baptised in Borrisokane, is that under one of those headings?

I have Hogans in my tree and a Mara as a witness/sponsor on one of my certificates.

    Cheers

    Karen

  • Hi Karen,

On all of the RootsIreland certificates (i.e., 1 marriage and 4 baptismal) the address is "Not Recorded" and the parish is "BORRISOKANE" (I've attached the marriage certificate and one of the baptismal certs)

    Thanks,

    Barb

  • Hi Barb

Now I remember your post from the tipperary rootsweb email group.

I too have many certificates that say address not stated, which is unfortunate.  On the ones I do have it stated, it is usually the townland which is very helpful.

I note the priest is the same on both those certificates.  I had purchased a "wrong" one from rootsireland and it was a marriage in1838, Parish Borrisokane, and the priest is also NR.  Interestingly one of the witnesses is Judy Costeleoe.

I don't know if having the priest is helpful at all.  But I do wonder if the original parish records might have more information.

    Kind regards,

    Karen.

  • Hi Karen,

I just googled "rootsireland" and "Priest" and "NR".  It appears that "PRIEST NR" is listed as the priest in certificates in other Tipperary parishes.  Could it possibly mean Priest "Not Recorded" vs. the priest's initials?

    Interesting about the Judy Costelloe!

I am hoping to find some original records when I visit Borrisokane in a few weeks!

  • I wonder if the Thurles connection is a red-herring; until 2014, Tipperary, for administrative purposes, was divided into North Riding and South Riding, with Thurles as the county town of North Tipperary.  Borrisokane is in North Tipperary.  Therefore, all births, marriages and deaths for North Tipperary would have been registered in Thurles, so maybe that's where Thurles comes into the equation.

  • Thanks, Patrick. That's good to know!

Karen... Here are some photos of the time I spent in Nenagh and Borrisokane.  Someone who I met in a forum (who most likely is a relative) invited us to dinner at his home and drove me all around the old stomping grounds of our ancestors. http://arioundtheworld.blogspot.com/2014/09/september-5-nenagh-searching-for.html

  • Hi, Here's some info on my g-g-g grandies from near Borisoleigh and Nenagh. John Ryan  c 1790 married Mary Mara c 1810  about 1815 and had a daughter Joanna Ryan c 1830. This Joanna married James Young of Rusheen, Borisoleigh in 1849. Thet had a daughter in 1850 who died soon after. In 1853 James and Joanne sailed for Sydney on the "Neptune " and stayedd with cousin, Peggy Kennedy. They then overlanded to Daylesford, Victoria, as miners on the gold diggings. This foune my branch of the family. Hope you can tie in this info with your ancestors somehow and we can swap ata. cheers rod Jeffery
