My great grandfather was born in Carrick on Suir abt 1843, but appears on the 1851 England census at St Martin's Workhouse in London. He was admitted and discharged with other Hassetts:

George Hassett born abt 1813 in Clonmel, a boot and shoe maker; Eliza Hassett born abt 1813 in Kilkenny, a shoe binder; Eliza Ellen Hassett born abt 1848 in Clonmel and George Hassett born abt 1850 in Clonmel.

Thomas Hassett settled in England and later married, but on his marriage certificate, his father is listed as John Hassett, occupation carpenter. I surmise that perhaps his own family died and he emigrated with perhaps an uncle and his family?

I recently visited Ireland for the first time and passed through Carrick on Suir :-)

  • Dear Kay,

    It's 10 years since your post so I hope this reaches you. I have traced my line to a Thomas Hassett who lived at Queens Court, off New Kings Road, Deptford, London according to the 1851 census. He married Johanna Neale in 1847 or 48, depending on the source, at Poplar, London. They had a son, John in 1849 and a daughter, Catherine in 1855. I believe Catherine is my great grandmother. The census return for 109a Queens Courts, Deptford, further includes Catherine Sullivan (probably who Catherine Hassett was named after) annotated as mother, Henry Neale son aged 30 from Co. Cork Ireland, Mary Neale, daughter aged 26 deduced from Co. Cork.

    It appears that all of these people plus a visitor, Hanora Connell, all lived in a room at this address. A 2023 view of the area around New Kings Road, Deptford shows it all nearly completely demolished.

    I have no other information about Thomas as yet so don't know if his father was John, a carpenter. I cannot imagine how grim and desperate life must have been for them and life in Ireland no better.
